We recently connected with Danielle Cross and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Danielle, thanks for joining us today. Alright – so having the idea is one thing, but going from idea to execution is where countless people drop the ball. Can you talk to us about your journey from idea to execution?
I have been immersed in the hospitality interiors industry for years while working at some of the Dallas’ top design firms. This gave me exposure to high profile clients including luxury hotel brands, unique boutique hoteliers and many unique restaurant groups. I’ve had my fair share of interesting projects: a luxury penthouse in the Middle East where money was no object, creating brand standards for other designer’s to use as a guide for Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts, and luxury . high rises here in Dallas.
My company started literally as a way for me to unwind and clear my mind from the day to day. To use my artwork and love of creating spaces as an escape/much needed break when I could feel everything around me was becoming a little too chaotic.
I literally started the company with a blank canvas – a pair of Drake OVO J’s that a friend had never worn and was asked if I could turn them into something unique. First, I started researching materials and paints and how to execute my artwork on this new ‘medium’ because I had never painted on sneakers before. I needed to know the best products, products that would last and the best quality and I had to learn the steps to take when painting on leather because I couldn’t mess these up. After I finished the design and he wore them out, I got so many compliments on my design and his outfit plus countless likes & tags. More and more people wanted items created custom that reflected their own personality. Since then, I have completed numerous pieces and have showcased my customs in local art shows, a pair is currently on showcase at an art gallery in Boston and I have created customs for athletes in collaboration with the NFL’s My Cause My Cleats.
The hardest part in getting the company off the ground was developing my brand. I took a lot of time to develop what I want to say and portray through the company and through my work. My colorful paintings and customs pay homage to my culture and my distinctive personal style which emanates local streetwear and expresses the vibrant spirit and atmosphere of my culture. Keeping the brand as a collective studio was important so I have the flexibility to do a little of everything, and as a creative that means everything. I created an outlet that lets me showcase all of my talents in artwork, sneaker customs and interiors without limiting me to a confined box. I have expanded on my interiors to more intimate residential projects focusing on being unique and different. To satisfy every client that seeks to express themselves and their personal environment in a unique way.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I have years as an accomplished Interior Designer under my belt and I have finally been focusing on developing my own work. I have always loved to personalize my things and spaces and love to paint on anything (seriously, errythang), now I’m doing the same for everyone else.
I customize sneakers and accessories, create unique modern paintings and am a licensed interior designer.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part is seeing others enjoy the work that you have created. To create a space or custom unique to them that says everything they are feeling or want to portray without even using words. To see their reaction means everything.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Thinking outside the box. Connecting with people in various areas that are not necessarily directly related to interiors or artwork. My best relationships are ones that I have made with clients outside my field.
