We recently connected with Danielle Costa and have shared our conversation below.
Danielle, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I started off as an intern at a radio station where I learned the basics and went from there. In my first full time radio job, I became a producer where I learned more of the technical aspects like editing, prepping, recording, etc. From there I was able to transition to being an on-air personality. I created my own show/podcast while also remaining on a commercial radio station and continuing to develop my skills. I learned through trial and error how to create compelling content and ultimately how to use multiple platforms to connect with people and communities. I used what I learned in radio and started working in digital marketing as well, taking my content knowledge to a new level where I have helped create social media strategies and campaigns for various brands. I don’t think there is anything I would have done differently to speed up the process because it taught me invaluable lessons and ultimately led me to where I am. If anything stood in my way at times, it was myself. The hardest thing sometimes is moving past your insecurities or “imposter syndrome” and just doing the things you want. The best way to get out there and learn, grow, and change is to just start doing it and creating for yourself!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am an experienced on-air host and marketing professional, working across various industries such as media, fitness, beauty, and healthcare. I got started interning while I was in college and from there I just continued to learn as much as I could about my craft, while taking on a myriad of roles at radio stations across the tri-state area.
My passion for connecting with listeners, cultivating community, and creating compelling content led to my first marketing role, where I learned even more about content and the ever-evolving digital space. I focus on creative and social media strategy, helping clients take content through streams of strategy to execution, finding unique ways to use digital platforms.
I have helped develop successful campaigns for a number of high profile campaigns for media properties and commercial brands alike. I think what sets me apart is that I believe impactful content and campaigns start with meaningful connection, regardless of the medium.
I have written copy and developed content for NBA legends, WWE stars, as well as micro and macro influencers across various verticals. Some of my past clients include OREO, AT&T, Sour Patch Kids, RITZ, Intuit, HBO, Kraft Heinz, Turner Media, and Olay.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I think there are so many more resources now than when I started and that is amazing for aspiring on-air hosts, content creators, or marketing professionals. I wish there were more platforms for me to play with and try out, as I truly believe the best way to learn is just by doing. There are also so many more online courses or videos and you can truly teach yourself any skill. I may not have had these resources when I started out but I am starting to dabble in learning new skills and am truly taking advantage of all of the amazing resources out there because your creative journey never truly ends!
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
The biggest example of when I had to pivot, was when I started my marketing journey. I was working at a radio station part-time and while I was thoroughly enjoying it and growing my skills, I felt that I wanted to do something more; learn new things and flex my creative muscles in new ways. That journey of discovery eventually led me to advertising. I learned my radio skills truly helped me understand content and as an on-air host, I knew what advertisers and listeners alike wanted to see (or hear). I still work in radio and love it, but have found a newfound appreciation for how I can use my skills in various ways and continue to learn and grow in a different field.
