We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Danielle Cather Cohen. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Danielle Cather below.
Danielle Cather, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My mom and dad had their hands full with me. I have two older sisters that are 14 months apart and were 6and 7 years older . They were academically and all around are incredibly successful- one is a professor of Japanese lit and the other a psychologist at Harvard …and I was not. I had many teachers tell me to sit down, control myself and there were many discussions with those keywords resonating oftenly. My dad would not hear of medicating me, so the only option for them and myself to be successful was for them to help me find my spark in a society that wanted a more controlled Danielle. I am an athlete and played soccer for 3 years in college and the only thing that I could sit down and really focus on is art. They had me go at age 6 to an amazing renowned American painter, Evelyn Leavens , once a week . When I was 12, my mom wrote a permission slip” a nudie note” for me to attend gestural live nude painting at Evelyns. I still have that note. They helped me find my spark and forever I’ll be grateful for them accepting me and pushing me to be the best I could. If you go to their home it has the evolution of my art and to this day they still buy a piece here and there …they are my biggest fans.

Danielle Cather, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
With over 30 years of practicing art , My paintings evoke various moods in order to transport the viewer to their own center. I rely on use of color to visually delight, unify a composition, and to create a mood and feeling in the viewer. The only way for me to make this a full time career was to diversify my art and go into other streams of sales.
Decided the best way to do this was to establish a print line for those that would not or did not have the means to invest in an original piece. I wanted to make art available… kind of a Martha Stewart approach.
I am a very goal oriented person and take what I learned as an athlete and use it for my business. I created my bucket list and the main goal that I have is to have my art ,Wallcover, print and decor line in a hotel or hotels. So, we created a commercial grade Wallcovering co. and now home decor, i.e. bedding , pillows and fabric line all drawn from my original art, made in South Carolina.
I aspire to create a joyful and vibrant experience through my art for all to enjoy.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
There are no limits and you are in charge of whatever path of creativity you choose.

How did you build your audience on social media?
I think being honest, true and showing a bit of uncomfortable or vulnerability as an artist is very important. Showing art and just throwing it out there on social media is the only way for me to gage how good or possibly not-good my creations are and I use the feedback to heighten my creativity. You gotta start somewhere and know that nothing is set in stone …all you can do is put your best foot forward and try.
