We recently connected with Danielle Adams and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Danielle, thanks for joining us today. How do you think about vacations as a business owner? Do you take them and if so, how? If you don’t, why not?
vacationing is essential. traveling inspires and rejuvenates me. i leave each place with fresh ideas, creativity and a new outlook that bleeds into my work. it’s necessary to take time to take time off and travel, and prevent burnout and fatigue.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
hey hey, my name is danielle, but friends call me d. i’m a la based (by way of ny) self employed/freelance photographer.
shooting food + bev (especially natural wine) is literally my bread + butter. i make dishes and wines pop with vibrant colors and high contrast flash photography.
that said, i can also capture lifestyle + editorial, events, spaces, products, headshots, stop motion gifs + video, etc. although i specialize in photography. i also have a background working on content creation, creative + art direction, graphic design + social media. i’m open to long term clients or one-off shoots + projects, and always down to travel.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
word of mouth and social media. most of my clients come from social media (specifically instagram), whether it’s someone seeing work on my page and reaching out or me messaging a potential client to see if they need any updated photography. i also get a lot of clients through referrals, which is pretty cool and always appreciated.
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
i’ve been shooting my food for as long as i can remember. i specifically remember shooting a “double doozie” cookie sandwich at the the mall food court in middle school with a point and shoot camera. i did a few freelance jobs with infatuation nyc when they were getting popular, while i was working full time on the creative team at s’well. i pivoted full time into the food + bev world as a hospitality agency’s full time photographer + social media manager. i now work for myself doing freelance photography for clients in la and beyond. now i can’t imagine doing anything else, and you know you love what you do when it doesn’t feel like work. the camera always eats first and i wouldn’t have it any other way.
