We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Daniella Leoni. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Daniella below.
Daniella, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you manage your own social media?
We started trying to manage it ourselves, since it was difficult for us to find someone who really understood our brand, the message we wanted to get across and the feel we wanted our social media to have. Every time we received a pitch from somebody else we were more and more determined to do it ourselves; however, neither of us are very active on our own personal social media, and content creation is truly a full-time job, which meant we would have to shift focus to other areas of the business to try and get this going. After three failed attempts, we decided to give another go at trying to find somebody.
We recently came across somebody who truly understood and presented an idea that we were on board with, and we decided to hire them.
Daniella, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Our company started as an experiment during the pandemic. We had time to develop an idea that had been circling our minds for a while and with all the free time we decided to have a go at it. We identified consistent issues in relationships amongst the people around us and we decided to come up with products that would serve as tools for people in relationships and that would promote time together as a couple in a fun way.
We launched our first product in June on 2020, and to this day we can now say we have six products in the market that are perfect for people who are looking to break the routine, increase romance, or have more fun. We also have our products in different countries like USA, Canada, Mexico, United Kingdom, Spain and Germany in their corresponding languages and cultural adaptations.
At Why Don´t We we aim to provide fun products for happy couples all around the world.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
I had worked for other people my whole life, until our business started doing well enough for us to be able to become financially independent; however, the experience of working for other left valuable lessons for team management, structure and motivation that accompanied with our own philosophy of life has led us to establish a work atmosphere that puts (as cliche as it sounds) happiness first.
We truly believe that if employees are not comfortable with their work-life balance, it becomes really difficult for them to be motivated and efficient. For us, life is about living it, and that becomes hard to do when you prioritize work above everything else. Employees who are over worked and drained don’t carry out their responsibilities in the most efficient way, so we have found a way that enables our employees to have some sort of flexibility with how they manage their time by working towards project driven goals that are broken down into smaller projects with deadlines. As long as their responsibilities are met, deadlines are met and they are available when it is required, we are fine with them handling their time on their own.
We have come to experience great appreciation and loyalty from our employees when their well-being is taken into consideration, they value that and are driven to do good by you, because you do good by them; however, it is important to mention that you have to have a system that makes everyone accountable. We have had great success in managing our team this way, but that doesn’t mean this system has gone well with everyone and we have had the uncomfortable situation of having to filter out those who don’t fit or work well with our philosophy.
My advice would be, find the balance that works for you with the people that are willing to honor your philosophy and that are happy to work alongside you to achieve success.
Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?
Most of our business comes from our sales on amazon, but our products are available on other online platforms like our own website (makinghappycouples.com), Etsy, Walmart, and soon to be in Mercado Libre in the Mexican Market.
Remaining mostly as an online business has made our logistics quite simple, as most of these platforms facilitate storage and shipping logistics which allow you to reduce cost on physical space and personnel. We are also able to manage our business from wherever we are, which has proven to be a great benefit as we are able to live and study other cultures that contribute to our knowledge and ideas for new products. It is also a great opportunity to learn the way the market works, establish a clientele and enough brand presence to be able to move to retail.
The cons of only being online is you are fighting with a TON of competitors. Retail seems to feel a bit more exclusive and competition is not as varied as it is on the online world.
