We were lucky to catch up with Daniela Zuniga Cordero recently and have shared our conversation below.

Daniela, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.

My business actually came about because I took a risk. Here’s the story: I was a recent SDSU graduate, and I had recently quit my job at Forever 21 to pursue a paid internship for graphic design, little did I know, there was no clear communication between the owner and his partner at this design firm about bringing me on board. Luckily, my uncle who owns Sanwood Fine Carpentry and Construction Inc. was looking for someone to work on the company’s social media and photo shoots for completed projects. My uncle then hired me as an independent contractor. I worked on the company’s social media and then I had my first interior photo session… I fell in love! This is where my love for photographing interiors was born. That same year I started working for my uncle, I also started to take on small photography gigs. I was a second shooter for various events. I then fell in love with photographing weddings too.

I’m SO glad I took that risk. One of my biggest fears when starting my business was not making it, financially, but I took that risk and thank God, I was okay financially. Years later, I have been able to build my clientele, meet many amazing vendors along the way, and I continue working on my business every day.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

I’m from San Diego, Ca. I’m a photographer, an elementary school counselor, and a new mommy! I’ve always had a passion for photography. It wasn’t until college that I realized I could turn my passion into a career. I completed an internship during college with SheWanders Photography, and that’s when I learned about creating my own style for my business. After this internship and after graduating, I started my career with photographing interiors. I then began second shooting at quinceañeras and weddings. Years later, I have a successful photography business! My main focus are weddings, family portraits, couples photography, and maternity photography.

I feel that what sets me apart from other photographers is my personality, editing style, and attention to detail. I love the candids, a little pose here and there, but mostly those raw and timeless moments that I’m able to capture for you.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?

There is always a goal for me. As a creative, and as a photographer, the goal is to keep growing and always create better work. I love learning, and that’s an integral part to growing a business. If you don’t learn something new, how do you expect to grow? I also love feedback from clients! I mean, who doesn’t? I always strive to be better, and deliver beautiful, timeless, images for my clients and audience.

Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?

The first DSLR camera I ever owned was the Canon T3i, which I bought with financial aid money when I was in college! When I decided to start my business, I needed a laptop. I went to Best Buy to apply for a credit card, since they offered financing. I got approved, but only for a certain amount, which wouldn’t cover the whole laptop costs; so I asked my uncle and parents for a loan. They both came to the rescue! And paid for the remaining balance. After this, my business started growing more and more, and I’ve been able to buy my own equipment ever since.
