We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Daniela Zubia a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Daniela, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Getting that first client is always an exciting milestone. Can you talk to us about how you got your first customer who wasn’t a friend, family, or acquaintance?
my first paying client came from advertising on Facebook marketplace! I was terrified of trying my lash services on someone I did not know, how would i greet them, what would they think? Mind you I was working from home so I know I would question going into someones home so I was extra nervous.. thankfully she was super nice, very patient with me and to this day she is still a loyal client.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have always worked in customer service environments, mostly call centers and insurance agencies, during covid which im sure many did the same I wanted to do something different, i have always loved the beauty industry but never really though about it for myself, I originally wanted to learn permanent makeup and talking to the instructor about the long waitlist at that time for the apprenticeship she mentioned she also trained for eyelash extensions, so i took her course, I hated it at first, I would get impatient, but I also did not want to quit so I kept practicing until I loved it,. It is now my main service I offer. One thing that I love about this is the relationships i have created with each of my clients, many have become good friends and people that I look up to,
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The best way and most effective way is word of mouth, I take pride in making each of my clients feel special, I always look for ways to genuinely connect with them, the rest follows, most referrals come from my clients talking about me and my services.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
As i started my lash journey I worked full time as a provider enrollment specialist, I would take clients after work, during my lunch and would extend my breaks to fit clients! It was exhausting but once i exceeded my income compared to my 9-5 I decides to quit my job, best decision I made!
