We recently connected with Daniela Benson and have shared our conversation below.
Daniela , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a time you helped a customer really get an amazing result through their work with you.
I was new in the city when I saw a post of a girl asking for someone that could take care of her two lovely schnauzers for about two or three weeks because she would be out of town on vacation.
I decided to do it, and it worked out so well, she continued to leave her dogs with me and referred me to her friends. That reference lead to more and more customers . Soon after, I decided to open my business for boarding and day care with a special care for doggies. No crates and I tried to make them feel like they are at home.
I had to move my business three times because we had too many customers .
Due to the pandemic I had to shut down the business as people stopped traveling and did not need a daycare service as they were home all day.
Afterwards, I studied to be a dog therapist and help people to improve their relationships with their dogs without training.
My future goal is to go back into business and help people to solve behavior issues with their dogs.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As long as I can remember, I’ve been a dog lover. I grew up in Mexico where there countless stray dogs. I would rescue some of them and take them home. My mom would find a permanent home for them.
I went to college and studied Public Relations and communications. After I worked for eight years as a reporter and tv news anchor but I always felt that my purpose was to do something related to dogs so that’s when it all started as I explained earlier.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Word of mouth. Giving the best of me and made my customers (dogs) feel like home was the biggest challenge. I always cared about reducing their stress of being far away from their families.
Happy owners were satisfied with my services which lead to many recommendations through word-of -mouth. Social media played a lesser role in gaining new customers.
Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
Small amount of savings. I started my business at home and gradually moved to a bigger location.
