We recently connected with Daniel Toole and have shared our conversation below.
Daniel , appreciate you joining us today. Often outsiders look at a successful business and think it became a success overnight. Even media and especially movies love to gloss over nitty, gritty details that went into that middle phase of your business – after you started but before you got to where you are today. In our experience, overnight success is usually the result of years of hard work laying the foundation for success, but unfortunately, it’s exactly this part of the story that most of the media ignores. Can you talk to us about your scaling up story – what are some of the nitty, gritty details folks should know about?
“Scaling up” can often be viewed in different lights—the thing that I’ve noticed most in my journey, is the consistency and steadfast frequency of performance. As I began to become more active in the community and surrounding ones, my platform began to grow, and ideas for new music and writing joined suit. The Pandemic had quite a clinch on outdoor performances, but I was very fortunate to use that time to not only reflect, but to implement new strategies for original works. As the journey continues, I plan to relocate focuses and to use different surroundings as a means of new motivations. Relocation is sure to have its shortcomings, but just like with much else, positivity and willingness to embrace obstacles makes for a smoother sail later! I’m very fortunate to be a musician in today’s climate; with technology in abundance, Google, cold-calls, and email have been a steady source of my outreach to new venues. This can be shown to be challenging, but consistency and professionalism have always proved to be key factors in the search. Patience and understanding coupled with faith…. are must-halves in these navigations, along with self-belief, confidence, and willingness to see your tasks through.
Daniel , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I was introduced to the industry through a friend who saw something in my skill set that I hadn’t noticed or paid much attention to; performance capability. I began to find myself in a rehearsal space that I’d never been in before, and I had a week to sum up courage, stage presence, and enough material to cover a three-hour performance. I got down to business right away. I’d always dreamt of the ability to perform, mainly the musical ability. The shot was in front of me, and I took it! There wasn’t much preparation in the option to make the date; and I credit my ability to transform and courage to complete. That very night has set the mode for performances in different atmospheres, the ability to adhere to those atmospheres, and the belief to be ready for challenges along the way to those! I feel incredibly blessed and sometimes, even chosen, to use my craft as a means to communicate with listeners through common ground. It’s been a positive thing for me to encounter, professionally!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Social media has been a massive part of my success—the ability to share new material, cover material, and writing, has been a part of my journey that is undeniably credited and thankfully so, to social media. As a matter of fact, my social media presence began to ramp up after my first performance, and I continued to use the platform for growth and ability to be noticed by the public, for my craft and the intent to continue to pursue and learn it!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I remember sending an email to a less-than-tasteful booking agent for a venue. Of course, I didn’t know the structure of the conversation that would follow, but it taught me to keep headstrong and I also took the calloused advice that I was given, to some degree. Along the way, we’re all sure to encounter less than tactful or less than professional behaviors or conversations; the best thing I could think to do was to dig deeper into my belief-bank and bare down to work harder toward more plentiful bookings and venues with a deeper appreciation for honest approaches to email.
