We recently connected with Daniel Sky and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Daniel thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The project closest to my heart is Modern Bop, which I share with my dearest friends and fellow musicians. This endeavor holds great significance as it represents the next chapter in the evolution of jazz music. Jazz is a genre that is constantly evolving, allowing each generation and individual musician to leave their mark on it. While embracing the modern era, I am deeply committed to honoring the roots of this music and paying homage to the pioneers and legends who poured their lives, energy, and passion into elevating it. I aspire to follow in their footsteps and propel jazz to new heights.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Coming from a musical family, with my father playing the French horn and my mother being an opera singer, music has always been ingrained in my blood and heart. From a very young age of 5, I delved into the world of Western Classical Music, mastering its beauty. However, as I approached my 18th birthday, I realized that I wanted to pursue a different path. While I deeply love and respect classical music, I felt that it didn’t align with my personality and what I sought in the art of sound. I yearned for the freedom to create on the spot and establish a deeper connection between my choices and the resulting music from the instrument. Upon completing high school at the Karol Szymanowski Complex of State Music Schools No 4 in Warsaw, Poland, I was accepted to the Henryk Majewski Post Secondary School of Jazz in my hometown. It was there that I engaged in my first experiences playing with other jazz musicians, a stark contrast to my previous experiences of solely listening to jazz music, which had always fascinated me. In 2016, I received acceptance to Berklee College of Music and the Berklee Global Jazz Institute, where I was honored with numerous awards and a full scholarship, ultimately graduating with a Master’s degree. This was a truly transformative experience for me, as I had the opportunity to study and perform with some of the greatest and emerging musicians in the world, in my opinion. The environment at Berklee was incredibly inspiring and instrumental in fostering my creative process, aiding in the discovery of new ways to play my instrument and compose my own unique sound designs. Boston, the home of Berklee, brought me together with remarkable musicians from across the globe who shared the same mission and perspective on music, which is reflected in my recent projects. I am immensely proud and grateful that I made the decision to take this significant step and leave my home country of Poland in pursuit of dedicating my life to the growth and evolution of jazz music. The initial years in the United States were particularly challenging due to the economic disparities between the two countries, but it has been a journey worth taking.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
One of the most fulfilling parts of being a creative artist is the sense of being the architect of your own destiny, as they say in Poland. This means taking full ownership of your actions and being the sole navigator of your path. It’s a beautiful and empowering responsibility. also dangerous at the same time because it’s like a big trial and error approach. The more you want to discover and experience, you need to experience it on your own skin, because creating what is the closest to your heart is something what you can’t take from the experience of other people. That is why they say jazz musicians are such an individualists and stubborn people, but you need to be stubborn if you don’t want to compromise your own truth, with the most overall truth about the universe. Jazz music is all about finding your own voice and style and to find this uniqueness, sometimes you need to be a rebel, and break some rules.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My mission is to bring Modern Bop music to the masses and, most importantly, to stir their souls. When people listen to my music, I aim to evoke vulnerability and create a profound sense of love and positivity that resonates through their entire being. In a world filled with anger, hate, and disrespect, I am dedicated to providing the opposite experience and guiding people towards inner peace, fostering a collective effort to build a better world.
