We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Daniel Rector. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Daniel below.
Daniel, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
2020 was an extremely tough year for a lot of us. My best friend Trina, was a huge part of getting me through the early quarantines and isolation. Unfortunately, Trina passed in 2020, peacefully in her sleep.
To help fill the void I started searching for a new best friend to share my life with. It was then that I learned of everything that dogs were going through in the midst of the pandemic. As restrictions were lifted and people slowly resumed their pre-pandemic lives dogs were facing abandonment at levels that’d never been seen before.
I knew I had to take action. I found a team of humans as serious about the cause as I am and founded the Pawson Project, dedicating 15% of net profits to helping save all the dogs that now need saving.
Everyone here at Pawson Project is extremely passionate about the work we’re doing, and we have no plans of stopping anytime soon.
Daniel, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Pawson Project creates clothes featuring my cartoon designs of all people’s best friends. We go out of our way to make sure that the materials used in our clothes are the above the industry standard and that the 15% of profits donated to our partners at Petco Love go directly towards saving our best friends. I am most proud of the millions of lives that Petco Love has impacted and knowing that we’re doing our part to help them in their mission, and even prouder knowing that both the Pawson Project and Petco Love are nowhere near finished.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I built Pawson Project’s audience on Social Media by focusing on two sections: Aesthetics and Consistency. I would urge anyone trying to grow a social media presence to consider both the Aesthetics and Consistency of their posts, page, and products. Pawson Project’s social media posts have been tailored not only to be as aesthetically pleasing as possible, but also each post has to answer the following questions: “Is this the message I’m trying to get across? Does this fit the overall mood I’m trying to cultivate?” Consistency as a brand is of the utmost importance. That consistency includes what we post, what the posts look like, and even being consistent on how often we post. It’s important to be nuanced in that consistency as well, as too many posts can easily lead to oversaturation. Once you have a system for designing graphics and deploying them as you build a social media presence, the most important thing is staying consistent with the deployment.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
One book that has had a tremendous impact on my entrepreneurial thinking is How To Lead by David M. Rubenstein. The book is a amalgamation of interviews of leaders and visionaries across multiple industries and decades and provides insight into how they’ve reached their levels of success and how they’ve managed to maintain the same successes. I’d strongly recommend it to anyone interested in a leadership role at any level or profession
