We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Daniel Palacios a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Daniel, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you recount a time when the advice you provided to a client was really spot on? (Please note this response is for education/entertainment purposes only and shouldn’t be construed as advice for the reader)
Be patient with yourself, but don’t use that as an excuse to avoid making progress! Change takes time, especially when it comes to behavioral changes. Humans are creatures of habit and it takes a daily intentional effort to become someone who is apt to quickly decide to try new things! Start with small, simple changes to your daily habits to optimize yourself and build momentum. That could be as simple as going to be 15-30 minutes earlier and waking up 15-30 minutes earlier daily. But you have to start somewhere, and the little changes over time will make a big difference in the long run. The encouraging part here is that the human body is very adaptable and positive changes don’t have to be a painful arduous process. Patience and consistency are the key!
Daniel, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I was an athlete my whole life in South Florida, particularly football! Luckily I had some great coaches along the way and some that inspired me to do the strength and conditioning work I do now!
I’ve got a natural inclination toward being creative in what I do and making training more fun or adaptable to an individuals needs. That’s how I started Kinetic Training and the Live Kinetically lifestyle! I saw the need for more people to have more options when it came to training styles and tools. Some people just don’t have the option of training with a barbell or dumbbell in the way they’re designed, so we adapt! I specialize in identifying some of the most innovative, functionally creative, and effective training tools available and that’s what my clients and my own personal training programs are built on. The foundations of movement and human biomechanics haven’t changed much in the last 2 millennia. However, our understanding of it has and with the right tools and a bit of an open mind we can make that process more efficient and enjoyable. Sometimes it’s just more fun to step outside the traditional boxes of training the body and that fun factor can be the biggest difference in how effective training is! You’re more likely to stick to your training if its enjoyable or you see that progress is attainable almost instantly. When you can modify according to your specific needs, you can change the intensity of your training at will to suit your daily stress levels and work loads and continue to make forward progress! That’s why I keep so many different training tools in my arsenal! It keeps things fun and interesting and engaging, but the principles of movement stay the same!
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
The perfect example of the adaptability of my system or “anti-system” if you will, was the COVID Lockdowns. When COVID caused South Florida gyms to all close down, I was able to continue running my business when no one else could. It was the years of staying creative, open minded and having a collaborative mindset with all of the equipment companies that I worked with that saved my business and clients during the early stages of lockdowns. The gym I was renting from closed, we had the option to take our training out to a local Davie, farm called Family Farms Farm Market, and we’ve been out there for the last two years. I can honestly say that was a blessing in disguise because so many of my clients have loved and enjoyed the change of pace and scenery. The mental, and emotional health benefits for everyone were incalculable as well! Just the ability to get outside, get sunlight, fresh air, and enjoy a workout without the fear of what was going on in the world got me and so many of my clients through it all. 2 years later I can honey say we’re all as strong and adaptable as ever!
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Having an open mindset of community over competition is critical for any coach who wants to last a long time. When you keep an open mind, and humble attitude toward this ever changing field of strength and conditioning, and make the intentional effort to collaborate with other coaches while knowing how to stay in your lane and focus on what you know you do best, you’ll always be better off. People pick up quickly on an insecure coach and it takes an insatiable willingness be a life long learner to get gain the knowledge necessary to feel confident in what you know and how you can apply it to your training. When you become rigid in your training you only end up closing yourself off to new possibilities in efficacy as well as clientele.
