We were lucky to catch up with Daniel Muni recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Daniel thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
As a luthier, I see myself as a caretaker of instruments, ensuring they continue to inspire musicians for generations. Each instrument has a voice, a personality, and a history, and my job is to preserve and restore that voice when it fades.
One of the most meaningful restorations I’ve done was for a professional cellist whose c.1830 Italian cello I had previously restored. After years of joyful playing, disaster struck—an airline accident left the cello with a crushed rib and severe damage. Seeing it in that state was heartbreaking.
Meticulously realigning and repairing the fractured wood, I used both traditional and innovative techniques to bring it back to life. When the musician played it again, the connection was instantly restored and his colleagues declared that it sounded even better than before.
This project was special not just because of the work itself, but because of the musician’s influence—his playing brings joy to countless audiences and his instruction helps shape the next generation of cellists. Being able to save an instrument that carries such beauty and inspiration reminded me why I do what I do: preserving voices of the past so they can continue to shape the future.

Daniel, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Daniel Muni, a luthier dedicated to the care, restoration, and setup of violins, violas, cellos, and their bows. My journey began as an apprentice at age 11, learning from a family friend who repaired instruments in his retirement. By 14, I knew this was my calling. In 2004 I founded a bow repair business and in 2010 my wife, Allison, and I transformed it into Muni Strings.
We specialize in fine instrument sales, expert restoration, and precision setup work. Our goal is to help musicians discover their preferred sound by bringing out the best in each instrument. Whether it’s reviving a historic violin, optimizing the response of a cello, or carefully adjusting a bow, I approach every project with the belief that each instrument has a unique voice waiting to be heard.
We are deeply committed to the musical community, supporting musicians at all levels and helping them experience the joy that music brings. In recent years, we’ve seen a remarkable rise in adults embracing music for the first time, and it has been a pleasure to support them on their journey. Helping them achieve their goals of self-expression and personal enjoyment has been incredibly rewarding.
What sets us apart is our deep commitment to craftsmanship and personalized service. Few shops in the country can match our level of craftsmanship and understanding. I take great pride in restoring neglected or damaged instruments, allowing them to sing again and bring joy to both players and audiences. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing a musician connect emotionally with an instrument.
Allison and I are also deeply committed to supporting students in school and youth orchestras, working closely with teachers to strengthen music programs. Since Florida cut arts funding, we’ve expanded our efforts and in recognition of our support, we are honored to be named the official string shop of the Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra.
For those seeking an instrument that truly resonates with them, or for musicians looking to unlock new potential in their current setup, Muni Strings is a place where artistry and expertise come together.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of my creative work is restoration—bringing instruments back to life and witnessing the joy they bring to musicians and audiences. However, when asked, “What is the most rewarding aspect of being an artist?” I would say it’s the ability to connect with people on a deep emotional level. Introducing a young student to music and seeing it spark a lasting bond is incredibly fulfilling. Providing someone with a means of self-expression and an emotional outlet is what makes this work truly meaningful. In fact, I believe that’s what defines art—the ability to create an emotional connection with your audience.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My mission is to preserve the history, artistry, and soul of every instrument that comes through my shop while fostering a love of music in the community. I see myself as a caretaker, ensuring that these instruments continue to inspire musicians for generations. Beyond restoration, I’m driven by a passion for supporting students, educators, and professionals in their musical journeys, helping them find their voice and express themselves through their instruments. Ultimately, my goal is to spread the joy of music.
