We recently connected with Daniel McGee JR and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Daniel, thanks for joining us today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
I am very happy as a Creative, if I wasn’t able to create I would probably go insane. I never wonder about having a regular job because I used to work a regular job and I was miserable. Being able to work on what I love is the best thing ever, even though it is ups and downs.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My father introduced me into music. He was/is a DJ and producer so he gave me the blueprint and knowledge to be able to start working on my own music. My grandmother was also a singer so hearing her sing at a young age helped me with melody and rhythm. I started out wanting to be a singer so I would write songs and dance like Michael Jackson and Frankie Lymon. I can remember my mom during the holidays to dance and sing for my aunts and uncles and they would all cheer me on. As I got older I started to get more involved with the world of hip hop and writing rhymes. I got into my first rap battle when I was in 8th grade and I was hyping the little crowd that was around us and everyone was shocked sense I was so shy, but when I started rapping everyone could feel the energy. After that I knew making music and rapping was for me. once I got to high school I was able to start recording and dropping music for everyone to hear. I got with a couple of independent labels and rapped with a few groups. Once I got in my twenties I knew it was time to really really take things to another level. I started doing shows around the city of Chicago and making a buzz for myself. in 2011 I started rapping with a local Chicago group called Uptown Celebrities and we opened for some local artist that would become huge stars like Chance The Rapper. After being in the group for two years we all went our separate ways. I took a break from music to get my mind right and rebalance. In 2016 I made a move from Chicago to Las Vegas, and once I moved I started a rock band called NSD since I play 6 different instruments. My band mate and I dropped 4 songs and played a few shows. As of 2023 I have put out 10 mixtapes, 1 album and over 70 singles. the music I make now is more guitar oriented but with a hip hop appeal. I really want people to know and feel a part of me every time they listen to my music and see my videos.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
The mission is to get people to love what they do, and to hope young musicians really take the craft series and bring the fun back to music.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of being a musician is getting a idea out of my head, making it sound like the way I envisioned and getting the reaction from my fans, that is the most rewarding part to me.
