Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Daniel M. Dyer. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Daniel M., looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
It’s honestly tricky to nail down one specific project. Our team at Visual Candy is motivated to tell stories that magnetize, motivate, and above all, move others into action. We love the proverbial underdog story, especially when at the epicenter of that tale is somebody trying to accomplish a feat or vocalize a message that is for the sake of others. We had the honor of directing, filming, and editing a handful of mini-documentaries for the National Hemophilia Foundation, which has to be up there in the top 3. Learning about the tumultuous- and often contentious- history of the hemophilia community, along with their close ties to the AIDS community, was eye-opening and soul-stirring all at once. We also wrote, directed and edited the award-winning documentary Sole Trail, which was centered around the ultramarathon runner Connor McClelland’s 100 mile race in honor of his mother, who was diagnosed with a rare form of dystonia. Of course, there’s also our new collaboration with Stages Learning to create a visual curricula for their comprehensive learning products for children with Autism… the list goes on and on, and that’s what we want! As long as the project has a genuine heartbeat, we’ll be there bringing it to life on the screen.

Daniel M., love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Visual Candy is a family-operated production house in San Diego, California that specializes in creating long-term relationships with unique companies, trend-setting brands and fascinating individuals who are burning with a story to tell. It all started when brothers Daniel, Andy and Petey transformed their passions for taking photos and filming videos into a business with a larger purpose. Growing up under the same roof, the Dyer brothers graduated everything from preschool to college together. Visual Candy was created on that 24 years of brotherly collaboration, and now sees our talents in the visual arts naturally interlocking with our business-driven mindsets. Diverse in portfolio and industries, we have worked with non-profits like the National Hemophilia Foundation, to apparel brands like San Diego Hat Company, all the way to the world of action sports with Redbull, and even the academic realm with San Diego State University. It’s pretty simple, we love to paint pictures with a camera and Premiere Pro, and we prefer those stories to be backed with some good old fashion moxy.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For us, the most rewarding aspect of the job is witnessing a client’s eyes widen with disbelief when they see a finalized video project. Knowing that you have a skill is one thing, but when you aim that skillset in an altruistic direction of community, that’s when projects truly explode with life.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Tell. Meaningful. Stories. If you are a non-profit organization, or an institution with a communal, inspiring backstory, or even just an individual cutting their teeth in this world in a brave, eccentric way… We want to tell your story. They deserve to be heard, shared, and celebrated on the screen. So let’s do just that.
