We recently connected with Daniel Lopez and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, Daniel thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?

I have always had a fondness for bears, with the Grizzly Bear being my favorite of all. Growing up, my father would jokingly say that when I was hungry, I would become grumpy like a Grizzly Bear. To lighten the mood, he bought me a squeaky toy whale and would toss it to me, saying “here’s your fish, Grizzly.” This playful nickname stuck with me and ultimately inspired the name of my business. When I started my company, I wanted to incorporate both my love for bears and my passion for technology. Thus, the name Grizzly Tec was born.

Daniel, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

I have always been fascinated by technology, the process of fixing things and solving problems. As a child, I would often disassemble and modify my toys. This interest led me to study mechatronic engineering and pursue a career in maintenance in the food industry. However, I always had a passion for technology and often assisted the IT department in finding new ways to improve and innovate systems.

In 2012, I started Grizzly Tec, initially providing technical support and assistance to friends and neighbors, helping them fix their computers and network problems. After receiving positive feedback and encouragement from friends, I decided to turn this into a business, starting Grizzly Tec as a DBA, working only on weekends and after hours. By 2016, it had grown into a full-time job.

At Grizzly Tec, we pride ourselves on providing customized solutions to meet our customers’ specific needs, regardless of the type of problem they are facing. Our services include but are not limited to: network, audio/video, lighting control, home automation, and HVAC system control. Additionally, we make it a priority to educate our customers on how to use the systems we provide, so they can customize and make changes on their own without needing to call us for assistance.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?

I never thought I would end up living in the United States. I was a maintenance manager for the largest frozen vegetable company in Mexico. My life was comfortable, with a stable job, a fully furnished house and just married. But for safety reasons, we were forced to leave our home and country, leaving behind everything we knew for an uncertain future in a new place.

Despite the challenges we faced, we were fortunate to have help and were able to adapt and learn new things. I started working in logistics and managing security for the factory in Mexico, which was a very stressful job, but it taught me a lot. During this time, my wife and I had our first child, who is an amazing child with autism and Down Syndrome. It was then that I realized why we had to leave Mexico and come to the US. The opportunities for our child are much better here.

It has been a journey and it is still ongoing. Now I have 3 children, and my own business which is growing. I am still happily married to my wonderful wife. If I have learned anything from this experience, it is to live in the present and enjoy each day, rather than worrying about the future. If you live your life well, your future will always be good.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?

I firmly believe that honesty and a willingness to help others are the key ingredients for building a strong reputation in any business. By consistently being transparent and truthful with customers, and by always making an effort to assist them, you will gain their trust and respect, which is crucial for building a positive reputation in your industry.
