We recently connected with Daniel Herrera and have shared our conversation below.
Daniel, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
I wish I could’ve started my DJ career a lot sooner. I didn’t find this craft until I was in an outpatient rehabilitation program. My love for music has always been there, and my curiosity about djing has always caught my interest. However, I never stuck with it or fully committed myself to it until I realized I had a drug and alcohol problem. Drugs and alcohol were really my coping mechanisms, but when I got into committing myself to djing, my whole life changed. Djing became my next coping mechanism and it’s helped me so much with my mental health, which is exactly why I was turning towards those two things. I’ve only been a DJ for a total of three years, so I’m still managing my life instead of “it” managing me. I can say I wish I would’ve started this craft when I was about 24 years old, but six years later I’m now here as a DJ, (I know do the math lol.) Thinking about it, my entire life would’ve changed if I were to start being a DJ a lot sooner at a younger age. I could say my life would be a lot more manageable as far as life choices and decision makings. I keep referring my life back to being a DJ because this is still my coping mechanism til this very day. Not only having that title or occupation, but being able to hop on the decks takes my mind off of things for just one hour or two hours, sometimes even all day!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into this music industry just by simply taking some leap of faiths and making connections with people. As I was still fighting my addictions at the time three years ago, I was still trying to transition to a normal life. So, bonding with everyone was really helpful when I struggled in my addictions and getting out there as a DJ. I realized I loved making new friends and connections. Fortunately for me, making friends is what sets me a part from everyone else in the network. So, if any other artists wants to get booked to spin at more events just start making friends and getting to know people. Talking to people to getting to know them can take anyone a long way. Genuine connections go really far. So if we’re working together please expect a lot of getting to know each other, for that’s what I do best. Never talk about business the minute you meet someone new, that can scare potential friends away.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The only particular goal I can say I have is to reach for higher heights. I want to continue being me and staying true to pick up more events to DJ and see newer and unfamiliar places. I want to continue staying on this right path, for I can see myself reach for places like music festivals or other bigger crowds. I’m very determined to see how far I get following this new path I discovered for myself. With my darkroom team, close friends, and my mother, son, and family supporting me along the way, I know I can get to where I want to be music wise.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
The best response I can give, again, is making friends. Anyone you meet somewhere and get to know, get their instagram or social media. You seen an artist or DJ performing, ask for their SoundClouds even or whatever social platforms they use to connect with their fan base. If people watch you and like the way you perform let them add or follow you on social media platforms. Even by staying connected with your followers, you can make music, create mixes, and send them out to people to get their feedback. Those are the ways you can even grow as an artist and as a person. Even asking everyone to share your posts, music, and mixes will bring in attention from people. Exposure can always be key if you try for it!

Both are great photographers and really know what they’re doing with their cameras! They take amazing pictures and videos. Also, they’re highly talented with creating promotional videos and content. They both have been amazing to work with and I’m very grateful and honored to work with them.
