We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Daniel Harper. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Daniel below.
Daniel, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
I think one of the things we do really well is setting expectations. We are very intentional to set expectations early, clearly and consistently of what clients can expect during each phase of our process. I also think that our customer support model is very unique. We have multiple team members working on every project to handle things like design selections & materials, onsite supervision, scheduling of construction and communication.
Daniel, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I always enjoyed building, even as a kid and I was just naturally driven to make things better. That is one of the reasons why I was drawn to the renovation niche of the construction industry. We get to go in and dream with clients to transform their spaces into the best possible versions. One of the reasons why we exist as a company is to make life more enjoyable. We want to design and create extraordinary spaces through an enjoyable experience. Our goal is not only to present a high quality product in the end, but to make the process of renovating as fun as possible for clients. I think what sets us apart is our willingness to take on creative and outside the box designs. We always say as long as physics and dollars cooperate, we can do it! We love partnering with homeowners and designers to help make their design dreams a reality.
How’d you meet your business partner?
Yes! So I actually met my cofounder back in high school. We were high school sweethearts, and at one time, I was working for a tract builder and she was working in the back office for another builder. We decided to save up enough money for me to leave my job and we took the leap of faith and started Renew Properties.
After starting the business, we came back from our honeymoon with several over draft fees. We spent very dollar plus a couple hundred more but by golly we stayed at the Hilton for that extra night.
Can you open up about a time when you had a really close call with the business?
Absolutely! I remember at one point early on in the business, cash was low. I had this poker set at home where I would store cash so that every once in a while, I could do something nice as a surprise for my wife, who’s an accountant, without her seeing or knowing about it in advance. It came to the point of cash being so low I had to bring my secret poker set stach to the table to be able to get us out of a close call situation from a cash flow standpoint.
