We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Daniel Grove. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Daniel below.
Hi Daniel, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I learned my craft through trial and error. Youtube was not yet populated with useful content as it is now and I didn’t have a community or other photographer friends that were willing to help me. I also didn’t know to reach out and find a mentor.
I wish I had reached out to local photographers and trained under them by assisting and shadowing. The skills that were most essential in my journey was not giving up, technical problem solving, and creativity in trying new things. As a photographer I always had a good eye for interesting photos but learning the technical side of the camera was necessary to create the images I saw in my head. Thankfully I like technology and understanding technical things so that helped a lot.
I could also have invested in some kind of classes or courses but I’m not sure if there were any in my area growing up.
I did later make friends with other photographers and they gave me some great instruction on simple things that took me to new levels and challenged the way I did things. Facebook groups were a huge part of my learning and opening my eyes to the bigger world of money making through photography.
Now as a successful leader in my area I enjoy teaching others and have created numerous educational videos on my youtube and even online courses to help those newer struggling photographers.
Daniel, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I got in to photography in high school as another creative outlet to explore making digital art. I come from a creative family always drawing, creating with Lego, and making computer graphic art. The camera was a more instant and satisfying way to make art in a new way for me.
Now, 19 years later, I offer nearly every kind of photography – weddings, families, headshots, product photos and even video for personal and professionals as well. I enjoy the variety and challenge each type of work comes with. I love that my clients get photos they can’t get anywhere else with a creative and unique touch. I spend time with each client finding out what they need, what they want, and what I can do to make their experience awesome. The art I create is important and meaningful for my clients and they appreciate my personalization and attention to detail.
I find locations that match my clients needs, I cater to any visual style they want, and can even create whole digital sets or props with CGI if the job calls for it.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to learn the value of my work and the importance of my service in peoples lives. I use to give away all my unedited photos and charge very low for my services. A friend basically slapped my head when I told them this. They helped me to learn to deliver quality over quantity and that clients don’t always want or need the things they think they do. Another friend and business coach helped me to see my art form as a business. And a business needs to be sustainable and support my personal life too or it’s just a waste of time.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I want to be personal and listen to my clients so I can deliver what they want and go above and beyond that. I have customers come back to me for all their milestones because they trust me and know I’m worth every penny.
