We were lucky to catch up with Daniel Franco recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Daniel thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. One of the toughest parts of scaling a business is maintaining quality as you grow. How have you managed to maintain quality? Any stories or advice?
During our previous work experience at one of the largest General Contractors in California, we noticed their due diligence when standardizing their internal quality control process, and preventive coordination. We are aware that these QC guidelines should be established early in our business plan in order to grow the company with a firm basis for quality. Consequently, we implemented checklists for each stage of a project, from startup, to in-wall rough-in and to closeout. Having these simple checklists, provide our field teams with a reference that can be used in any of our projects and help avoid comebacks and hidden costs for our owners.
We seek to standardize our QC to the extent possible so that our clients can have the peace of mind that our field teams are committed to mitigate any concealed conditions or quality comebacks.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am Daniel Franco, Co-founder of DuMonde Builders. We are a fast growing residential and commercial general contractor in the LA Metropolitan Area. Our main strength is the fact that our partners come from highly sophisticated large general contractors. While studying our competitors, we noticed that smaller GCs lack professionalism and proper client management. We realized many smaller GCs were difficult to reach by clients, lacked accountability and disregarded their contractual schedules.
We pride ourselves of the fact that we establish realistic and achievable milestones with our clients, and are proactive at communicating issues, while also providing potential paths for resolution if an unforeseen is found.
Our mission is for DuMonde Builders to be highly sophisticated general contractor, prioritizing client needs and always bringing reliability to the table.

Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
Starting our own general contracting business was always our long term goal. After establishing the corporation, and acquiring the appropriate licenses and insurances, our first step was to test the market for potential projects, while still working a full time job.
We initially reached out to our industry connections to share our plans and our goals to venture as independent contractors. Shortly after, we were given the opportunity to build our first project. We then successfully delivered the project on time and on budget. This project then became our portfolio, and opened the doors for a few other bid requests received. It was then that we decided to bet on our business and left our employers while bidding multiple projects. Since then, our business has grown exponentially and we are now actively looking to diversify into the multifamily sector.

Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Regardless of the industry, I believe having a management team that celebrates short and medium term goals is key for motivating employees. Having an active look at quarterly goals and conveying not just the shortfalls, but also the achievements with all business stakeholders is crucial to empower individuals within the organization.
