Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Daniel Ferreres. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Daniel, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
The project which I’ve been getting quite a lot of attention comes from my personal exploration. This is my project called “Africa On Us”.
I am half African and half Spanish and I grew up in Spain. Being completely honest, I struggled to get in touch with my African identity as there was not many people like me. This came across as I never was able to fully appreciate and connect with my African side.
This changed the moment I moved to London, from a city with 170K people to one of the biggest cities in the world. There I could appreciate and understand better my heritage through how other people celebrated and understand theirs.
That got me to start this project, which ultimately represents my life journey as a someone who grow up in a Western Country while carrying his heritage.
Daniel, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Daniel Ferreres, and I’m born and raise in Spain. My dad is Spanish and my mom is from Equatorial Guinea.
I believe I always had a creative mindset, from drawing all the time to the ideas I always created in my head. Sometimes I think the camera just chose me.
I mainly aim to create images with meaning that are aesthetically pleasant, my goal is to be able to sit as one of the biggest references in the industry in a near future.
I worked my craft for such a long time that I am happy to take in any type of commission as I know the delivery will be great but my focus is still the same one.
I shot from brands to different celebrities: from Floyd Mayweather to Central Cee.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
My parents are working class, and they wanted their kids to do well in life. But that doesn’t mean they understood me.
I was always a very smart guy (according to my teachers) but I lacked motivation in everything I did. I couldn’t get excited on the education system as it never stimulated me.
When the age arrived for me to go university; my parents didn’t let me take a gap year so I ended up in Law + Laboral Relationships as I couldn’t have done something else (I was still leaving under their roof so I had to accept their rules).
After three years and a half and building enough confidence and believe on my talent and passion on my photography, I decided to tell them I had enough, I was about to move to London to chase my dream and nothing could stop me.
Quite reckless and tough, never lived alone, didn’t understand about adult life and responsibilities and my English was quite bad, but time proved it was the right choice.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
Still now, I work Monday to Monday, as it quite difficult to get a consistent flow of clients on one particular field.
I fund myself everything I have and to do that you need to have a source of money bigger than your expenses and the only way for me it’s as I do.
I worked in every kind of job you can imagine, from waiter, to glass cleaner, to manager of cafes while studying at university, it didn’t matter. I couldn’t go on holidays for years because I rather had the equipment to push my practice to the next level and it paid off.
You need to sacrifice in life to be able to understand the value of things.
This allows me aswell to get grounded; as everything I love for the love of photography is my own sweat and blood, no one else.
I take a lot of pride in everything I do and that’s my fight.
