We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Daniel Dang a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Daniel, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
We first opened our small business in 2016 under a trademarked name. After 5 years of being in the boba industry, we gained a better understanding on the operational standpoint and established great relationships with our distributors. In the beginning of 2021, we decided to take the risk in becoming independent – be our own brand.
In the course of determining the future of our small business that we worked so hard for, we had many doubts if this was the right decision – “How would our independent business perform among a saturated market of boba shops in Orlando? How would our customers react?” After much thought, we took the leap and Dang Boba & Musubi House was born.
It has been over a year of being an independent brand and we’ve seen nothing but positive growth within the business and magnanimous feedback from our supporters and the community.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
Can you please tell our readers about yourself: I came from a small family of hard working parents and my passion for hospitality was influenced by them, especially my Mother. My Mother always cared about taking care of others, especially when she cooked for family gatherings. She was the one to introduce me to the culture of food and how it can bring everyone together.
How you got into the Food and Beverage industry:
In High School, I took Home Economics and Cooking was instantly my favorite subject. It was then when I realized that I genuinely enjoyed the process of cooking – from prep to plating and serving. In college, I focused on the F&B industry and received a degree in Hospitality Management.
What type of products/services do you provide:
Dang Boba & Musubi House offers a variety of boba tea flavors with freshly brewed loose leaf tea. We’re known for our Brown Sugar Milk Tea and Mascarpone Crema Topping. Our à la carte Spam Musubis are individually hand wrapped and made-to-order. The fan favorite is the Volcano Musubi (2 Classic Spam Musubis topped with house torched spicy crabmeat and furikake seasoning). We are now offering catering services with our Dang Boba Bar stands.
What you think sets you apart from others:
We are currently the only boba shop in Orlando that also offers a Musubi menu. We’ve also been commended multiple times for our exceptional customer service in creating an experience for our guests. Moreover, we now offer Boba Bar catering for events.
What are you most proud of and what are the main things you want potential clients to know about you:
We are most proud of the positive feedback and support from our community. We genuinely love what we do – but most importantly, we love to share what we do.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
A few years ago, we were given the opportunity to cater a Boba Bar for a friend’s wedding. The wedding helped build our reputation for catering opportunities for potential clients. We’re now able to bring boba experiences outside of our storefront walls and into people’s homes and their special events.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Our Dang Boba Bars have introduced us to new clients throughout Florida. Not only did we think we’d receive more wedding events to cater, but we’ve also been able to cater Boba Bar stands for baby showers, birthdays, and even bridal showers. Boba is really for all ages and all events – it’s a social gathering.
