We were lucky to catch up with DeVito recently and have shared our conversation below.
DeVito, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I came from a family of musicians and vocalists so since I was a young kid I’ve always known the music was my passion so it’s always been in the back of my mind to have a life pursuing music. I didn’t start actually pursuing music until into my 20s. Me and my friends used to freestyle driving down the road or just hanging out at home and I was always really good at it they would always tell me you need to do something with music bro, so after years of working Jobs that never full filled me or made me happy I decided that was what I was going to do.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Dude DeVito is my stage name. Daniel Lafayette Carmichael V is my birth name. I am a recording artist and song writer with a passion and over obsessive love for music. So I grew up around musicians, vocalists, and just music in general, my pops was an incredible drummer so being little and watching him practice and then him just playing all the great old music, the classics to me over and over I just felt in my soul and it just spoke to me. so I fell in love with music very young. I grew up in metro Atlanta Georgia and rap and hip-hop and its culture is prominent and thriving here. I was drawn to it immediately, when I first heard Andre 3000 and big boy rap it was like Santa Claus came on Christmas Eve Christmas Day and the day after. I loved the beats the rhythm the storytelling the attitude the tenacity the struggle and the fearlessness of it all. I felt understood. I had a lot of anger in Side me just from trauma I experienced as a kid , and all through my teen years and in my early 20s I was in and out of jail Group homes rehab and pretty much just always in trouble. Rap Music gave me a way to channel that and use it for something Beautiful and creative. I wrote my first song when I was 11, it was terrible. I still kept writing and it became a release for me so I kept on and kept on writing always fantasizing about being a Rapper or Recording artist never really imagining it to be a reality. well throughout the years you know what they say practice makes perfect and with all that practice well I became really good. In 2021 I was introduced to Mayhem, chief engineer for Third Eye Collective and he saw the talent and hunger in me and decided to work with me. If you do your research you’ll see Mayhem is a legend and a one of a kind, hands down the best engineer that I’ve ever worked with. That’s where mine professional Journey began. To be in this industry discipline and work ethic must be top-tier if you want to succeed. I feel like I haven’t slept in two years because there’s always something more you can be doing or learning, you have to be a sponge. A lot has happened in two years and a lot more is coming. So my goal to fans followers and the world is show them you can defy the basic level thought of you can’t be this or you can’t do that because you can do and achieve whatever the f*ck you want. How bad do you want it? Thats what sets me apart, I don’t care what you think I don’t care if you like me. I like me. Yeah sometimes I can be corny, emotional, say some stupid shit, but I got a Lotta love and I love what I do. so if you feel that way then follow me on this journey together, shoot me a message and lets talk. If you need a songwriter or just some honest critique reach out and lets work. Much Love
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The feeling you get when you’re performing and everyone’s just rocking out to your shit.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
that you can do it all on your own. I don’t think people understand how much goes into music
when you first start yes you got to do it on your own
but understand that relationships are far more important then anything you think is in this industry.
