We were lucky to catch up with Daniel Caprio recently and have shared our conversation below.
Daniel, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I’ve wanted to play guitar probably my whole life, I was just drawn to it. I didn’t start learning till I was 13 and didn’t start taking writing music seriously till I was 17 or 18.
Daniel, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Billy, Pete, and I started Weird America because we were all just obsessed with music; playing it, writing it, listening to it, talking about it. When we first started playing, before we had any songs written, we’d improvise and jam. And the jams would move to so many places we’d forget where we started. Then when we’d write, each of us would have ideas that were so interesting. We’d feed off each other’s creativity. Then live, we try to feed off the crowd’s energy. From start to finish, it’s a collaborative effort.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Just how revealing the work is and how vulnerable you have to be. You try to create something where there was nothing, combining ideas based solely on knowledge, instinct, and taste to make music you wish existed all your life. Throughout the process, you hope people understand what you are trying to do or say. Then you have to confidently perform it as if you are sure about it when all you know is that you like it, sometimes, when it can feel like risky work.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, it is little moments where the idea works. Not just when the song flows how I imagined it would but when I see it having the impact I hoped it would. When someone sees themselves in the lyrics or I see a couple hold on each other a little tighter at a show. Even just feeling the energy of a crowd, knowing that they are in it with you. That stuff makes it all worth it to me.
