We recently connected with Daniece Brady and have shared our conversation below.
Daniece, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
A life changing risk that i’ve taken was turning down a media sales job to pursue an internship for a record label in Miami. I attended the NAB Sales Leadership Foundation at Howard University in 2017 and the program was so helpful, I met great people and learned a lot, but this one particular interview with a company wanted me to change who I am in order to fit their company and I hated that. I knew that the media sales job would be something stable for maybe a few months to maybe a couple years, but ultimately knowing that I couldn’t be true to myself and also not pursuing one of my goals would be disappointing to myself.
So while I was on my way to Miami I turned down the media sales job, took the internship at the label and learned so much not just within the music industry but in business in general. I spent 4 years working my way up at the label while being myself. It made me realize my strengths, weaknesses and gave me experience in many ventures helping me realize my passion in branding and public relations.
Daniece, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a risk taking and creative 27 year old young woman originally from Brooklyn, NY by way of Tampa, Florida, who received her Public Relations degree at Florida A&M University. I’ve always been creative from writing to photography and more but i also loved the business aspect behind the creativity. While in college I did a couple internships within public relations but my internship with Slip N Slide Record label launched me into the entertainment industry. While at the label I grew from intern, to project manager who also did contracts, creative director, marketer, publicity and partnerships, manager and more for multiple Artists on the roster. I gravitated more into branding/marketing and PR which led me to doing the same for a boutique marketing agency for a variety of clients outside of music.
I realized that every where I went I always took the leadership role and could do the same for myself, building a company named, Liquid Era, that not only disrupt the norms of how services are done, but also creating an environment for other up and coming professionals that’s safe overall but especially mentally and emotionally.
Liquid Era Agency is a brand/ marketing and PR agency whose mission is to help professionals and brands create new era’s in the dopest way possible by helping to build a solid brand foundation and separating them from competitors. We think outside of the box creatively and indulge in risk taking because not everything has to be done a certain way, there’s endless possibilities. We provide consultations, brand and marketing strategy/coordinating, partnerships and publicity services.
I’m proud of how different Liquid Era is from the name to the way how we think outside of the box by simply having fun and being able to be ourselves. I want potential clients and followers to know that the most groundbreaking inventions didn’t start from someone wanting to follow the crowd and be the norm, they wanted to make a change and disrupt the norm in order to grow for the better.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson that I had to unlearn was to leave your personal feelings out of business. Every professional who has told me that advice has contradicted themselves. To a certain extent you do have to keep your emotions in check but ultimately it is inevitable because we’re all human.
There was a time when my previous colleague wasn’t able to receive our Artist full payment for a show before they arrived to the venue. The person overseeing this ended up withholding the payment due to my colleague acting out of frustration and felt disrespected. I had to step in and talk to the person, understand his feelings and make him see our frustration from our point of view. I didn’t fully take feelings out of it but instead used it to my advantage and backed it up with facts in order for him to understand and trust me enough to give the full payment.
Sometimes feelings can be the answer that you need in certain moments.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
2019-2020 truly kicked off the time of me having to prove to myself just how resilient I can be. I didn’t know it then but 2019 began the final year of me being at the label. I moved into a new apartment with my then best friend and I was working so hard wearing multiple hats all at once, I was slowly but surely burning out because although we already had a small staff, it became even smaller with people leaving or getting fired left and right which meant more pressure on me. On top of the pressure from work, every month i had to worry about being evicted because my old best friend ended up leaving me to cover rent and late fees myself.
As time went on, I was facing more difficulty at work and with more pressure came more negativity and eventually in 2020 i was let go from the label. I was burnt out and depressed but I still had bills to pay and goals that I wanted to achieve, that was my rock bottom in that moment. But with God, supportive family and friends I was able to keep pushing out of the darkness. I went to events to network, I started freelancing to grow a diverse portfolio outside of music, created content building my TikTok audience, and now building my own agency.
