DANID KARIM, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I had taken a variety of classes that taught different disciplines. Certainly, I have learned about painting styles and techniques but at the end, there was always something missing and unsatisfactory for me. Something incomplete. This feeling prompted me to know and learn about the Old Masters and how they created their master pieces. As an artist, I was always amazed about the level of skills and the compelling and beautiful work produced by these magnificent artists. So, I decided to follow their footsteps. and learn as they did.
In my opinion, an essential “skill” to have for this purpose, it is having a leaner’s mindset. It is a skill. A learner’s mindset to me means the intrinsic capacity and preference a person must have to learn as well as the actions such an individual takes in order to fulfill this orientation. I have ‘learned to have’ a learner’s mindset. So for me, in order to fulfill this orientation I knew I had to set out into that direction and basically start again from a different departing point.
I think that one of the possible obstacles artists may have for learning more is themselves, their mindset, that is by what they believe about their own artistic capacity, skills and such. It is very personal for each individual.
Learning is a continuum regardless of your profession.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
The advancement on my artistic skills by virtue of following the old masters methods and techniques, served as a catalyst for me to want to show my artwork and work on my name. It was a breakthrough. I wanted to start to display my pieces in professional galleries so that people could get to know me and my art. I realized that it is a necessity and .essential to engage and learn to participate in this arena. In the last 4 yrs. I have been part of Solo and Group gallery . exhibitions and currently I am being represented by Spirits in The Wind Gallery located in Golden, Colorado.
Learning is a continuum. I am focus in continuing my growth as an artist which means constant learning. I aspire to create
pieces of art that inspire and elicit a delicate emotion, or an emotion that one feels when any regular object is simply beautiful.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect is without a doubt when people like my work. Specially when they appreciate craftsmanship and value it. It is even more rewarding when a person wants to have one of your pieces.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Although, I had academic training in Visual Arts , I wish I had received more in depth education regarding the old masters methods and techniques. I wish I had known early on that the old masters or classical training is the best way to build your strong foundation, strong knowledge about the visual language.
This type of formal visual training is useful and essential in any art form. In fact, learning any craft: painting, sculpture, drawing, etc. is a technical achievement. For this reason, Classical formal visual training teaches the techniques that are, and function as essential tools for the creation of a piece of artwork. It is fundamental to have this basis from the start so that one can spare /avoid much frustrations and time-consuming unnecessary mistakes committed by lack of knowledge of the technique(s)
