We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Danicia Tate a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Danicia, appreciate you joining us today. Do you have a hero? What have you learned from them?
Our Mother is my Hero. Growing up and throughout our lives, she has always wanted better for us. A better childhood, a better environment and amongst other things, a better education.
If you know our Mom, then you know she’s the “Real Deal Holy field”. Mom didn’t mess around when it came to our Education. We were actually homeschooled as well and this is where I found my love for books, reading and writing.
Danicia, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m an introvert, throughout my childhood our Mom would buy journals. In these journals I was allowed to freely write anything and this gave me a voice.
As a child who struggled to communicate, I know exactly what it’s like to feel left behind. This is why, the ‘Dakota Children’s Books Series’ was constructed on inclusion.
From the moment our Mom gave me that first journal, I knew I was an author.
These books and games are for everyone, even our elders who love to read books from our series.
I am most proud of my work because I cannot believe the little girl who was at home, in her room, writing in these journals is now writing the words of these books.
The fact that I am able to write about my loved ones and the series is based on our daughter Dakota, I am forever grateful.
I finally have a voice the world can hear and see- And it’s an effective learning tool. You can truly do anything you put your mind to, and it’s always a plus when you can help others while you’re doing that. It really feels good when someone says they read one of the books. ((smiles))
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
Funding for my small business came from hard work, literally. I got my tail up every day and went to work.
I had to develop a financial plan for all materials and services to produce products. This included things such as illustrations, language, editing and printing services, etc.
Once I completed research about the industry and had a figure in mind, of what it would take to fund this business. I moved forward with my financial plans for my business.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist and creator, is that people see my work.
For many years, an artist’s work didn’t get seen or even known until after the death of the artist.
Today, as an artist, I am very fortunate to instantly share my work and creativity with anyone.
