We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dani T. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dani below.
Hi Dani, thanks for joining us today. Can you take us back in time to the first dollar you earned as a creative – how did it happen? What’s the story?
So this is a throwback to when I was the new kid on the block from another state in a middle school setting. I was “the weird art kid”, ya know. I got picked on like most kids. However, as I started showing more of my personality I tried different clubs and sports then I began to find my groove as a teenager. As I opened up more, it felt like more eyes were on me. I never liked people peeking over my shoulder but when you’re an artist, you encounter it often sketching in public. Slowly but surely I had gotten comfortable enough to draw in front of the other kids without hiding it and they thought it was cool. Cool enough to be the year book cover. Cool enough to get paid.
My first creative entrepreneurial journey was as a gel pen tattoo artist. I remember even the kids that bullied me got in line to get temporary gel. I would do at least two tattoos a lunch period for 50 cents. I kept my pencil case on me like it was . I felt like I was finally in and honestly as a kid that was all most of us actually wanted to go to school for. It was definitely a bonus to get paid financially, sometimes even in food. I didn’t make billions or even a hundred because the teachers found out and kept an eye on my lunch table. Kinda killed business having the fuzz around. That moment taught me many things but some I still value today are to keep track of inventory prices/cost and to always be my best self while following my dream.
It showed me that just developing myself was the best investment I have made and continue to make each day.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Peace and blessings reader, I’m Dani T, Creative Founder and C.E.O. over at InVision-Graphics.art. My work promotes good health awareness through home and office goods. Think mugs, mouse pads, pillows, blankets and more. “Health” starts in your mind and heart but then blooms through habits we keep in our day to day. As an artist and inspirational speaker I help people express ideas through branding services as well. With the Visionary Community steadily growing, I can create anything to inspire others to be their best self. All through design.
Since 2016, I’ve been a certified graphic designer and that information opened my eyes to a new level of art. It felt like finally beating my high score on my favorite video game but in real life. Taking knowledge from life experiences and mixing it with my natural talent to help others is always a win in my book. January of 2021, I self taught myself how to stream, created promotional posts and was able to successfully pull off a 5hr live charity art stream on YouTube. We raised over $700 in a day to go towards another car after an accident had left my brother and his family without transportation. It’s not the first charity event I’ve put on and it won’t be the last. Giving value to the next person is as important to me as me receiving my wins and flowers.
Art has taught me that what I create carries weight in the mind that see it. By hand, I create about 100 pieces of art each year to keep my passions relevant and present. These include tiny 1 inch square ink pieces all the way up to painted office and home wall murals all since starting my career during college. I don’t share this as bragging but to share with those wondering is it possible to hang on to what they love to do most. The way I see life is, if I can imagine it, it is in fact possible for me to accomplish this. Maintaining this mindset is very important when it comes down to completing my task in the most effective way.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Building a social media presence as a creative takes good time management and boundaries with self. Otherwise, you may end up stressing yourself out and eventually slacking off. Setting time limits on projects, editing, posting and streaming saves me from straining myself. It also gives The Visionary Community an idea when to look out for what’s next without over saturating the delivery of posts. I originally started out posting my art whenever I got around to it and hoped it would get seen if I threw a couple of hashtags on it. Then I created a schedule of the week and coordinated the best times and days for specific post. As I developed my brand, my content became stronger. Just in switching up these small things my posts became more frequent and more engaging.
Each week at noon on my Instagram, for example, I do live fitness on Tuesdays and then chat wellness on Thursdays with people during their lunch breaks. The idea of consistently doing this maintains my page as a safe place for the community members to vibe with me. Even if someone isn’t an artist or a fitness buff, they still feel welcomed and hopefully leave from my content feeling good even if for a moment. Passing on a good vibe or laugh is contagious. The idea is to get someone watching to pass along new information or a good feeling to someone they cross paths with.
We’re all a work in progress but remember we are also works of art. Social media is always changing and evolving so there’s always a good time to try new things with your brand and get into your own groove. Try editing your videos with more sounds or meme edits. You never know what will happen.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I am a person that loves to travel and be with family. I enjoy the moments without price tags on them and being a professional creative means I get to do that. Choosing to create InVision-Graphics was the most freeing and exciting decision I made for my business. I’ve missed events with family and friends working for companies that would toss me away if I have to take of for a cold. I can stay in touch with my clients no matter if I’m in town or not. I create my own hours but with moderation of downtime and discipline during my working sessions.
Last year I went on cross country roadtrip, this year took off time for medical and still have a system of income. It’s definitely a journey but it’s worth the people you meet and the places you get to see. I am blessed to say I have gained mentors and students throughout this business venture that will always hold a special place in my memories.
It’s the little things that blossom into the bigger dreams. Those are what made me want to follow my creative path in the first place.
