We were lucky to catch up with Dani Overbaugh recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Dani thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
Over the last several years my husband and I have had an increasing desire to move out west. It was one of those “things we will do when we retire”. When the pandemic started, we really took a step back and realized that we didn’t want to wait. Our happy place has always been in nature and even though we had a house in the mountains, the short weekend trips weren’t enough. We decided that instead of vacationing out west we wanted to make it a permanent move.
So, we embarked on what I am referring to as our “mid-life upgrade”. We found 37 acres in the Wind River Mountain Range in Wyoming and bought it. We sold our houses and a lot of our belongings. Got storage units and started the process of building our dream home!
Because we are adventurous people, we decided that buying raw land in the mountains wasn’t crazy enough, so we are general contracting it ourselves (my husband) and I am the designer and decorator. Do we have any idea what we are doing? Kind of, but not really.
We are taking a HUGE risk moving to a small town, 1800 miles away from our family and friends in a state where we don’t know anyone. It is considered an investment in our happiness at this point, and we won’t ever suffer from “nature deficit disorder” again.
If I have learned anything from my years working with older adults, it is DO NOT WAIT. Do it now! Before it is too late!

Dani, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a board-certified Health and Wellness Coach and owner and operator of Flow State Coaching. Health and Wellness coaching appealed to me because of my own personal health and wellness journey. I was once a smoker and was overweight and lost 70 pounds, ditched the cigarettes and took up ultra-triathlons and ultra-cycling. After years in corporate healthcare my mental wellbeing was not healthy. I discovered meditation and took up a mindfulness practice that has helped me in more ways than I ever imagined.
My role as a health and wellness coach is to be a collaborative guide with clients to assist them reach their own personal goals. I am passionate about this work because I am someone who has been physically unhealthy and also on the brink of a mental breakdown. I believe that people can change and that often they need someone who can help support their journey in a non-judgmental way.
What makes me the proudest about my work is when my clients “graduate” from working with me-this means their goals have been met and they have developed the skills they need to “re-calibrate” themselves when necessary. Nothing feels better than checking in with them down the road and hearing how much their lives have changed.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Word of mouth has been the best source of marketing for me so far. Nothing says “I was happy with this service” than having a client or former client refer a friend or family member to me. I am beyond grateful for the trust that my clients have in me.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
The Andy Stanley Leadership podcast is a wonderful resource for me. The book “How to lead when you’re not in charge” by Clay Scroggins is excellent as well. I worked with a Business Psychologist early on in my professional career which was a very worthwhile investment for me to learn more about myself and what areas in my leadership techniques could use an upgrade.
