We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dani Kahn. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dani below.
Dani, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you tell us a story about a time you failed?
In 2018, my husband Evan Vega and I embarked on a remarkable journey by founding a multimedia design company. Fueled by our passion for creativity and innovation, we envisioned a venture that would blend technology and artistry to craft meaningful and impactful digital experiences. However, unforeseen challenges arose, and we eventually found ourselves facing the unwelcome intrusion of the COVID-19 pandemic. As the world grappled with the global crisis, our multimedia design endeavor was regrettably compelled to close its doors.
Undeterred by adversity, my husband and I faced a crossroads with unwavering determination. In a remarkable twist of fate, we transitioned into a business that had an intimately familiar place in our family: coffee roasting. In the heart of Apache Junction, a small yet spirited community, we boldly embarked on a new chapter by opening a small cafe and roastery named ‘HG COFFEE.’
Reflecting on our journey, I realize that every twist and turn has profoundly impacted our lives. Before, in our pursuit of the design business, our alignment was misplaced, and our creative energies were spent on clients who couldn’t fully appreciate the depth of our work. Through introspection and deep contemplation, a transformation occurred. We sought solace and inspiration in our faith and values, forging an unbreakable connection with our spiritual beliefs and our community’s needs.
The trajectory of our lives changed as our purpose evolved. Our days are now spent crafting an immersive coffee experience that transcends the ordinary. With each meticulously roasted batch, we infuse our commitment to quality and authenticity, mirroring the sincerity with which we engage with our community.
In essence, our journey is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. The closure of one chapter paved the way for the creation of another that is inherently more aligned with our values and aspirations. ‘HG COFFEE’ stands as a testament to our commitment to God, community, and the pursuit of excellence. It has forever transformed the dynamics of our lives, shaping us into individuals deeply attuned to our purpose and the power of genuine connection.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
HG COFFEE represents a harmonious fusion of passion, community, and purpose. Established in response to life’s unpredictable turns, my husband Evan Vega and I ventured into the realm of artisanal coffee roasting and opened a small cafe and Roastery in Apache Junction. Our business model revolves around authenticity, quality, and heartfelt engagement. We meticulously select premium coffee beans, expertly roast them on-site, and serve them with a commitment to excellence.
At HG COFFEE, our approach is centered on serving not just coffee but fostering connections. Our cafe becomes a space where neighbors become friends, conversations flow, and authentic moments are cherished. The cornerstone of our success lies in aligning our values with our business, providing our community with freshly roasted coffee that reflects our dedication to craft and service. This endeavor, born from a desire to enrich lives and build genuine relationships, continues to thrive as a testament to the transformative power of purpose-driven entrepreneurship.
Can you share one of your favorite marketing or sales stories?
In the midst of our journey, a pivotal moment arose when our hearts embraced a daring leap of faith. The yearning for a place to call home and the pursuit of our passion converged in an audacious decision that would forever define the essence of ‘HG COFFEE.’
As we scrimped and saved, nurturing dreams of owning a home, destiny unfolded its canvas in an unexpected hue. A gleaming beacon of opportunity presented itself in the form of a $25,000 coffee roaster. It was a gamble that defied convention, a choice to pivot away from the traditional path toward a realm of uncertainty.
Terrified yet fueled by a deep-seated conviction, we grasped this chance with trembling hands. We could feel the weight of our finances stretched thin, teetering on the precipice of uncertainty. But amidst the unease, a radiant truth shone through: we were undertaking this journey not just for ourselves, but as vessels of God’s purpose.
And then, another layer of the story unfurled. We were venturing into uncharted waters by renting a space within the heart of Superstition Ranch Farmers Market. A place synonymous with family, tradition, and the ebbs and flows of a local community. The odds, stacked against us, were undeniable, but so was the fire within us, ignited by the resonance of shared values.
In the days that followed, the aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans filled our space, and the symphony of the roaster’s crackling dance echoed with promise. We faced skepticism, raised eyebrows, and even the lurking shadows of doubt. Yet, guided by an unwavering faith, we embarked on a journey where every roast carried with it the essence of courage, resilience, and devotion.
The roaster wasn’t just a machine; it was a testimony to our willingness to trade comfort for the pursuit of our calling. Each sale made, each cup served, was a tribute to that decision. And as the fragrance of our coffee wafted through the air, so did the whispers of our story, inspiring others to embrace their own paths of conviction.
Looking back, the fear and the financial strain are woven into the fabric of our story, but they are not the defining threads. What remains is a canvas painted with the hues of surrender, courage, and the knowledge that we are stewards of a greater purpose. In stepping onto that precipice, we weren’t just investing in a roaster; we were investing in our faith, our community, and a promise that even in moments of vulnerability, we were divinely equipped to conquer. And as we embraced our place within the heart of Superstition Ranch Farmers Market, we affirmed that sometimes, taking a risk within the embrace of a close-knit community can yield the most remarkable rewards.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
In the midst of ‘HG COFFEE’s’ evolution, we transitioned from corporate coffee norms to a faith-infused experience. No longer bound by transactional standards, we embraced Christian values, allowing them to shape our interactions. Our café became a sanctuary for heartfelt connections, resonating with the essence of faith.
This shift wasn’t without challenges, yet our Christian beliefs guided us. We realized that by unlearning the impersonal, we could offer authenticity and kindness. As the aroma of our coffee blended with shared stories, ‘HG COFFEE’ emerged as a testament to unlearning, faith, and the potential for God’s grace to infuse every cup we serve.
In the wake of COVID, fear gripped the world, reshaping how we interacted with one another, even in the simplest of settings like drink service. Amidst this new norm of cautious distance, ‘HG COFFEE’ stood as a beacon of resilience and grace.
Recognizing the hesitation that had seeped into interactions, we chose a different path. Instead of succumbing to the distance, we leaned into grace and patience. We saw beyond the masks and barriers, valuing each interaction as a moment to connect, to remind one another of our shared humanity.
In the quiet moments of waiting, we discovered the power of a smile in our eyes and a gentle word. We didn’t merely serve coffee; we served understanding, compassion, and a reminder that amidst uncertainty, we could still share moments of genuine connection.
By breaking the standard of sterile distance, ‘HG COFFEE’ became a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. In the midst of fear, we found courage in embracing our shared vulnerability, proving that grace and patience could transcend the barriers that COVID erected. As people ventured in, we didn’t just offer a cup of coffee; we offered a taste of normalcy, a reminder of community, and an oasis of human warmth in a world that had grown cold.
