We recently connected with Dani Bernabei-Grassi and have shared our conversation below.
Dani, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. The first dollar your firm earns is always special. We’d love to hear about how you got your first client that wasn’t a friend or family.
Like all photographers, I started out with friends and family. Built that portfolio. Put myself out there through heavy advertisement via social media. I was in the Marine Corps when I’d first started out and one of my Staff Non-commissioned Officer’s (SNCO) looked to me for family photos. Putting my best foot forward, I delivered to him my best work and he not only paid my rate, but even tipped me. It felt amazing to have that recognition!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
So for those who may not have read about me before, I am a freelance photographer. I got my start back in 2020 amongst the pandemic pandemonium. I started out taking pictures of birds and general wildlife but progressed to portraits after gaining the confidence in my skills and equipment over time. After branching out with individual portraits and events, I started expanding my horizons to concert photography. I’ve shot photos for Dark Divine, Saving Abel, and many local musicians in my area. I have so much to learn and I look forward to this passion every time I get in front of a barricade at a show!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
The best ways I have grown my audience through social media is through availability and advertisement. I have made my photography available across multiple platforms and do my best to engage with everyone amongst them. I also advertise on my personal profiles as often as I can via sharing posts to my story on Facebook and Instagram, but also asking for the support of friends and family by doing the same. They are the ones who truly keep me going.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Honestly the best source of new clients has been via word of mouth and advertisement through social media groups. Not only does it help me gain those meaningful connections, but it also gives me assurance that those clients will recommend me for future reference.
