We caught up with the brilliant and insightful DAngelo Garza a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
DAngelo, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I first knew that I wanted to be a musician when I realized how easy it was to jot down lyrics in Grade school. It first started off as poems, then transitioned into lyrics about my life. I created my own stories of my life as a child. After reading back what I wrote, I became convinced to pursue my dream as a rapper. Music influenced my life a lot, every where I went music was heard. Birds singing, radio stations playing, the sound of a river flowing. I wanted to be a part of someone’s life through music and make a change doing what I loved.
DAngelo, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
A lot of people can say I’m the nicest person they ever met once they get to know who I am. That is until they find out why I’m so nice due to how tough life was for me as a kid, then it’s a whole different perspective. I decided to be the change in my family through music, due to the fact that gang affiliation was common in my family tree for males. It just wasn’t something I wanted to be. I Aim to break the cycle by showing others that anything is possible if you really strive for it. Despite getting knocked down from people, I still found a way to get back up and continue moving forward. One thing I can say I’m most proud of throughout my career was starting my career to begin with. I dealt with so much hardships in school and home that I thought twice about music, but then I realized how much music saved me from the world. The main thing I truly want with all this is, to be heard. Regardless if its 1 listen or even 1,000,000, Being heard is the main thing I really aim got. I wanna build a community that gets together and uplifts one another.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
The way I built my audience on Social media started when became a producer in High School. I would make beats and upload them online for the world to see and it eventually led to a short following. Fast forward to the summer of 2020, I released my first song with my Netherlands friend IzzyBelaBid whom I met during high school online. He was one of the first people that supported me online from when I used to produce, and eventually became my brother. After releasing our collab track “You want” it gained popularity in the Netherlands and locally in my area. Which eventually led to press and interviews with Magazines and articles. The rest is history!
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I learned throughout my entire career was, a lot of people will celebrate with you but nobody wants to work with you to get to where you want. There’s been a lot of people who’ve came around to celebrate the success with me and wanted to benefit from it without putting the work in. I never had a lot of friends growing up so it felt like I was making connections, however they weren’t real friends I needed to surround myself for the long run. Sometimes the bigger picture is too big for them to understand. Since then I kept those who truly supported me around me and continue to stick to my goals until the very end.
