We were lucky to catch up with Dane Rauschenberg recently and have shared our conversation below.
Dane, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s jump right into how you came up with the idea?
After completing 52 marathons in 52 weekends, I realized the importance of having access to local knowledge, safety, and motivation. He envisioned a platform where anyone, regardless of experience, could connect with a guide who understands their unique needs – whether it’s finding the perfect running route in a new city or getting the push needed to start a new fitness routine.
I knew that an app would be the best way to reach as many people as possible.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am best known for running 52 consecutive weekly marathons averaging almost a Boston qualifying time back in 2006 period since then I’ve written multiple books on running based on my own experiences and also the people around me. I have done my very best to surround myself with those who know more than me about the sport of running so that I too can share with others.
With the Sherpa app I saw a need for people to be able to remove as many excuses and barriers from getting into shape as possible. Admittingly it started with an idea to make women more safe when they ran but it expanded to many different areas.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Talking about ones own resilience seems a little bit too much back padding for my personal tastes but I’m don’t even have to look that far in the recent past to discuss such an instance. I tore my root meniscus in my knee in late 2023 but didn’t realize it until early 2024. After a surgery and lengthy recovery, it showed that the surgery did not work and I was going to have to get a partial knee replacement in order to continue my love of running. After that surgery a little over a year ago I was able to finally start running again in July of 2025.
Since then I’ve been able to run 13 half marathons and a marathon. However I’m still not without setbacks as I’m dealing with some muscle imbalance in my quadriceps for the first time in my life. Even though I felt like I was coming back slowly, nearly 16 months of not using my left leg left it not where it needed to be. The past few months have actually had to drop back down to barely running at all as I work on ways to rehabilitate this and make sure that I can get back to running at the speed and pace that I want to again.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My mission is to leave the world in a better place than when I found it, take what I’ve been able to learn from many walks of life and help other people reach their own goals. Whether it’s through my books, my speaking engagements, or the app Sherpa, I’m doing what I can with what I have to help as many as possible. I’m not exactly curing any diseases but I know through personal anecdotes and many messages throughout the years that I’ve been able to help inspire other people chase their own goals.
