We were lucky to catch up with D’Andre Good recently and have shared our conversation below.
D’Andre , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
1 Saturday night in 2018, I was sitting around hungry and it was late at night. I only had a taste for “home-styled” food, not anything from a chain type of restaurant but the only thing that the delivery platforms had on them were the chain restaurants. My girlfriend at the time got super upset because I decided to go all the way across town to a food truck that just so happened to be outside of a popular nightclub. I pulled up and see all of these people dressed up, while I’m standing in line with sleeping pants, a muscle shirt, and some house shoes on looking very out of place lol. I ordered my food, and of course got an earful all the way home, but that’s when the idea came into my head because I was thinking that I could have saved myself an argument if I was able to order from this place and have had it delivered. I felt this would work because there has been an upsurge in support for minority owned businesses, especially on other delivery platforms but there were no minority owned delivery platforms. What is unique about us is that we offer a wider delivery radius, better visibility for the smaller businesses, and higher profit margins. I am excited because people from underrepresented groups spend $3.3B/yr on delivery so the market is very ripe and we have a tremendous upside.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Starting this business has been a journey and I have wanted to give up several times. You will get 1000 “no’s” before you get that 1 yes, but that 1 yes could be the turning point for your business. All it takes is for the right person to see you and express interest in helping to grow your business. Minority owned startups receive less than 2% of all VC capital/year but as of late, there have been a lot of programs and opportunities geared toward helping minority owned startups. Also, our customers and the traction have helped me to stay the course because Urban Eatz Delivery or companies like it are needed on the market. I know that I have people watching everything I do in business and those same people are motivating me to keep moving and look forward to seeing me at the top. I knew what I was signing up for when I started Urban Eatz Delivery, so quitting is not an option.
Okay – so how did you figure out the manufacturing part? Did you have prior experience?
Well, initially, I was going to buy into another companies franchising model for delivery services, but decided against it because I would never have completely owned it. Thankfully I didn’t do that, so I found a company to build it for me and we outsourced the work. I handled all of the design and Beta testing myself, with the intention of setting up a maintenance contract. My ultimate goal is to hire a CTO once we get funding. I have learned to educate myself on every phase of the business (which I have), so that I am never blindsided and have a clear understanding of what is going on and why it is going on.
