We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful D’Andre “Dre” Sherill. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with D’Andre “Dre” below.
D’Andre “Dre”, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
I pray my legacy is filled with lots of love and gratitude from those I’ve helped along the way. But most importantly I pray my legacy is remembered from how I used my faith in God to tell my story and how I was proud to serve God with my all, while loving and leading my family unconditionally as I grew into fulfilling my purpose here on earth.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am Dre Sherill, owner and founder of ICan IWill Sports training. I created my company in efforts to create a safe place where athletes of different backgrounds can come together and train with one goal in mind, to be a better overall person and athlete, while helping others grow as well. A training culture that’s inclusive for everyone, that changes you mentally just as much it does physically.
What sets my training apart from others is the fact I’m hands on and everything I have my clients do I do myself. From showing them the different movements; rather it be a box jump, agility cutting, to broad jumps or speed treadmill. I demonstrate everything of what I want from them and break it down to their levels to ensure they understand what’s being taught as well.
The thing(s) I most proud of is the feedbacks I get from parents of the growth they see from their child mentally. How the improvement in their abilities or self-esteem has grown or the joy they have when they get to come train with me. While also the fact I’m not afraid to talk with them about God and how my Faith has helped me become who I am.
I never force my Faith and beliefs on any of my clients but when they do ask questions I pour my heart out to let them know what’s burning inside of me and how God has given me the passion to help and do what I do.
Anyone that comes and train with me or follows my journey will see my passion for helping others, for serving God to the best of my ability while helping others grow into a better person mentally and physically through my training and the culture I’ve built.
I encourage everyone I train to help the new ones and continue to push the each other to be better every time we meet.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
The way I carry myself and how I go above to ensure my clients are doing well outside of training. Going on college visits, or to professional tryouts with clients to ensure I’m there to help them settle in to compete at a high level.
Going on small trips to basketball games, football games, bowling events and other activities just to give them a chance to enjoy life in general.
Showing them that we’re one big training family and can enjoy time outside the gym together to make memories and have fun.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Summer/Fall is usually the busy time for my trainings. Back to back years from 2022-2023 I had several health issues come about and knew I had to find strength to keep pushing through to ensure I was there to continue to train and help my clients. Over time I had several tumors grow throughout my body that my surgeon from the past told me to keep an eye on. Knowing regardless God has the last say so and refusing to worry myself I continue to push along. On top of these issues I’m deathly allergic to bees (first time stung July 4th, 2016, anaphylactic shock died and came back to life) and was stung twice through the summers these years as well.
Finally, due to the pain of these tumors growing I had them removed without telling any of my clients (8/11 removed). Took a few days off to recover and got back to them in the gym. 8-10months passed and I had several more removed.
Able to move and be myself again I started being active and getting myself back in shape while still helping everyone. I finally shared a picture of myself showing areas where the tumors had been removed along with an update of how I looked and felt.
To say it was awesome on how I showed everyone how strong I was but as well how dedicated I am to serving my purpose would be an understatement. They showered me with love, thanked me for still showing up even in the midst of my storm and how they appreciated me even more for my resilience.
