We recently connected with D’andre Darrisaw and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, D’andre thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I first realized I wanted to take a creative path when I was a teenager. I created one of my first songs out of boredom one summer with a friend using a DIY setup with pretty much all things we already had around the house and an old desktop mic. We created a pop filter using a durag, hanger, and old foam finger from the high school we went to and and recorded a song on 2Pac’s “Ambitionz az a Ridah” instrumental. I’ve always was surrounded around music equipment growing up from my brother who’s been creating music for as long as I remember. When he noticed my interest in music he automatically saw my potential and invited me and my friend to record a song in his studio which at the time was a very big steppingstone for us in our career. Once we got in the studio I fell in love with creating music and have not stop making music since then.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi I am Levon (Love On) an aspiring recording artist born and raised in California. Levon is actually my middle name and backwards it’s “novel” cause I believe my music is my story and if you follow through you can actually have a better understanding of who I am as a person. I make all kinds of music but mostly hip hop, r&b, and rap. My biggest music inspiration is my brother Darion Dsaw who taught me damn near everything I need to know to successfully pursue my music career. This year I just dropped my debut album “Therapy Session” which is a collective of songs I made throughout the years while healing from past trauma. While songs on my album being very upbeat and high energy my album is bringing light to having a healthy outlet of expression and venting. Having someone to talk to and getting extra help isn’t spoken on enough.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Inspiring people! I feel like through out my journey I had to learn to accept that even if my music journey may not lead to fortune it’s ultimately not about the money and never been about the money. I always saw me creating music as something that was bigger than me or bigger than any materialistic thing in this world. I just hope all the years I’ve put in in to creating my art in the free unhinged way that I create will leave a legacy strong enough to keep me alive even when I am no longer here.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Not everyone is looking in your best interest or even your friend and also that the music industry preys on artist and there dreams. People in this industry will take your passion and use that to persuade you to purchase there services or promise you a dream that can not be promised. I would say watch out for scammers, watch out for ingenue connections, and watch out for snakes. I’ve lived in LA for close to 4 years and I’ve been having a tough time building genuine connections and find myself attracting leeches and people who just want to use me for there own benefit. I know this is not always the case but definitely my biggest struggles I’ve face since moving to LA to pursue music.
