We were lucky to catch up with Danasia Neal recently and have shared our conversation below.
Danasia, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you have a hero? What have you learned from them?
My grandma. She introduced me to God, so I’ve had that foundation since a little girl. At the time I didn’t know or understand but a relationship with God was being built. It’s so important to maneuver through life.
My grandma has always been my backbone. We have our ups and downs but if I call her, she coming when it matters most. She’s also been a magnificent help with my son and his academic advancement.
Danasia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I knew at a young age I wanted to be a lawyer in California. I always chased that goal. I thought I wanted to do criminal defense, since my focus was to help my community. As I transitioned from college to law school I realized there was more to it than criminal defense. I love it but it’s not a primary focus in my practice.
I provide small businesses with legal protection ranging from forming your company, preparing contracts to filing trademarks, etc. Essentially, my goal is to help my community but in a different way, a more creative and positive way.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I listen to Eric Thomas the Hip Hop Preacher a lot and have since college. He definitely got me through college and law school. A few books have helped me including the untethered soul, ceo of your own law firm, you can’t teach hungry and art of war (which I haven’t finished yet lol) but there are others. Those few just stuck out to me.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I’m still learning but acting off of emotion. It’s so easy to not act off emotion in my profession but in my personal life, it’s not that easy. People you are close to can be a distraction, good or bad. It’s good when it’s good but when it’s bad, it can become an emotional battle which causes me to be thrown off in my professional setting. I don’t like that. I appreciate the demand in my profession, and it simply don’t allow for any distractions so I have to learn to balance. If that makes sense.
