We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Danangelowe Spencer. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Danangelowe below.
Danangelowe, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
Growing up in Jamaica and also moving to the U.S at a young age the marker for 2 major stages in my life. In Jamaica I pursued Art for as long as I’ve known myself. Then I went to high school and that was the beginning of me defining myself as an artist, it was also at this stage that I formally started to focus all my education on the arts, drawings, paintings, leather carving and even architectural drawings. This stage of my life I would say is the root of who I am then I moved to the U.S and I expanded my education and art palette into more digital works. I was introduced to a new genre, filmmaking, which I later on pursued in college while learning, photography and other digital art forms and still continued to expand on my paintings. Moving to the U.S and going to Mount Saint Mary College is where I solidify within myself what I was passionate about and what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. ART. While in college I became know as the “artist guy,” a person versed in arts. After doing my thesis film “Art Reality Truth?” (A.R.T) on what is now the real mission behind my work, it dawned on me that I am just an “Artboy/ARTBOII.” I ultimately change the spelling of “Boy” to resonate with how we spell “Boii” in Patois, A Jamaican dialect. after this point I committed to this identity, it’s simple, it reflects who I am at the root of my identity, and ultimately if there is one thing that I would want to be know for it would be art, not just for creating, but for using art to change lives, educate, inform, solve problems and ultimately help my viewers to find their own truth.
Danangelowe, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a multi-hyphenate Jamaican born artist whose creative work includes, film, photography, graphic design, music, mixed medium paintings etc. Passionate about visual storytelling & conceptual art, I continue to expand my horizon in the direction of becoming a multimedia artist and creative director.
I earned my degree in Communications and Media Studies while concentrating on Film Production. My other areas of studies includes Fine Art & Film Studies From Mount Saint Mary College.
While receiving a formal education, I created the business D.A.J.S Visuals, and the brand ARTBOii, an ever-expanding brand. ARTBOii is a streaming culmination of different creative forms of Danangelowe, the Artist.
In a quest to continuously understand life and its fundamental truths, as an artist my art often poses a question to its audience. This element can be found in my philosophy that art should not provide the viewer with an answer to their curiosity but rather enable them to find their own truths through questioning and reasoning with oneself.
As A brand and business my skills includes Creative Direction, Branding, Photography, Videography, Fine Art, Creative Consultation. My specialty areas are Short Films, Ads/Commercials, Narrative style Music Videos, Abstract Videos, Documentary, editorials, Product & Fashion Photography, Commissioned Fine Art Creations. In essence ARTBOii is a on-demand boutique style creative direction agency, a place where we ideate, collaborate, and create to get the desired result of the client.
I’ve had several things that I am proud of but if I had to choice one thing at this very moment I would say I am proud of the fact that I was able to receive my trademark for “ARTBOii”. This moment alone have kept me consistently inspired and motivated to continue my journey, as an Artist, A Brand and A Business.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
PEOPLE, in short the most rewarding aspect of being an artist/creative is the people I get to meet and impact. Over the years, especially through creating a lot of video/film content and also doing photography I’ve met some wonderful people along the way. Much like the frame of a photograph capturing a moment in time, I myself mentally capture people in these moments in time. How people interact with my work is very rewarding. I sometimes get to observe the reactions, the subtleties, the moment when they realize something greater than my physical work and what is on the surface. Also I’ve met some interesting and fascinating people and have been able to work with them and I must say most people are more alike than they think and that to me is a piece of thought that sits well with me as an artist.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Yes, my creative journey is fueled by several things but one of my biggest goals is to use all the creative things I do to change and elevate the creative and economic landscape of my native country Jamaica and ultimately the Caribbean, while having a global voice.
