Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to D’anae Grandberry. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
D’anae, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Any thoughts about whether to ask friends and family to support your business. What’s okay in your view?
This topic is one that has been argued about for the last few years when it comes to anyone growing and owning a business. I’ve been fortunate enough to have family and friends that truly do support my business. They have been great about spreading the word about my business and my family has always invested in my work.
I believe that there are many cases where friends and family would rather support big businesses but will ask for discounts from someone trying to build their business and view their work as just a hobby.
I, much like any entrepreneur, has experienced this at one time or another.
With that being said, if you know an entrepreneur or if you know of any small and local businesses, go support them!
D’anae, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is D’anae Grandberry and I’m a photographer. I moved to Atlanta about three years ago from Nebraska and have been taking photos since I was a freshman in high school. I remember taking my first photo with my moms camera when I was about 10 or 11 years old, It was on Easter Day when my dad playing with my niece outside on the slide, with the most perfect sun glare beaming on the two of them. I knew as a senior that photography was what I wanted to pursue, so in July of 2016 Q’s-Vue Photography was born.
Through my work I try to capture not just a model posing but who they are as a person. I’ve worked with a few clients that have struggled with their self image, and I always want my clients to see what I see in them which is that is that they are beautiful. There was one client in particular that comes to mind, she was a close friend of mine and she called me crying after she received her photos, she told me she has never felt so beautiful and that of course brought tears to my eyes. If I can help someone fall back in love with themselves, that’s what truly matters.
As far as what sets me apart, I always try to tell a story through my photos and try to capture off guard moments that tend to produce the best shots.
I am very proud of how far I have come since I began Q’s-Vue Photography in Nebraska, and now building my brand in Georgia.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect is when I see my work in people’s homes. I can not express the joy it brings when I see a photo I have taken on the wall in someone’s living room.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
The biggest thing for me was starting over in a new state after moving from Nebraska. I did not meet many people at first, so spreading the word about Q’s-Vue Photography was difficult, with me being more of an introvert. Not to mention after making my move, my laptop which I rely heavily on was not working properly and prevented me from editing my photos. Fast forward today, I have been making more connections and taking more photos.I was also able to get a new computer, which has helped immensely! I started selling my work again on ETSY during slow months selling nature, landscape and stock photos. I continue to utilize social media more.
