We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dana Wendel a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Dana thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
My mission is to continue to help change makers, healers and women entrepreneurs make more money online, so they can create more impact. As a single mom, creating a business and working in the restaurant industry, I’ve seen how important it is to make more money online with less time and less energy. I know that as my clients make more money, doing what they love, they are able to take care of themselves, their families and their communities more deeply. As someone who was raised in a trailer park and grew up on food stamps, I can say that, no money doesn’t bring happiness, but it does bring power over your life, your health and your ability to create massive change in the world.
Dana, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I got into Spiritual Healing at 16 during my first ever yoga class, held at our local St. Augustine YMCA. The teacher had us form a circle with our mats. She turned the lights off and placed a single candle in the center of the room.
This was the first time I had fully tuned into my body and MY own energy. This was the beginning of my journey. It’s the first time I experienced God and felt something bigger than myself guiding me.
As a highly sensitive empath, with lots of family trauma from addictions, I had already experienced my family being evicted from our trailer that I grew up in, bouncing around 5 different homes and almost going into foster care multiple times, losing my mom to alcohol at 17, and an abusive relationship at 18. As well as my dad in and out of rehab, jail and homelessness.
With so many difficult experiences to navigate, I noticed that my parents didn’t have the tools for healing that they needed. And that most of their problems and addictions were from unresolved past trauma in their own lives. Rehab and church did not help them but seemed to be the only things available.
I went on to follow the pull I had to yoga, I then get certified to teach Kripalu Yoga at 21. Which then led me into a decade full of certifications, trainings and classes in holistic healing, Reiki, Chakra healing, Sound Healing, Shamanism, plant medicine, herbalism and much more.
At 25 I became a single mom to a beautiful baby girl. And with that, I realized how limited my time was to work, make money and support a healthy lifestyle for her and I… especially as a “trauma disrupter” as my trauma teacher would say.
I believe that we live in a time right now with lots of trauma disrupters. People who are here to disrupt old patterns of toxicity, addiction, and scarcity. People that maybe didn’t have the tools but are committed to raising this next generation with positivity, health and abundance.
As a single mom, I was working in restaurants, and teaching yoga at different studios around town. I started marketing my yoga classes online and quickly realized that the time and energy that it takes to market and promote, was not worth the $20 to walk away with.
A frustrating space to be in, when your passions don’t pay the bills.
I started selling private reiki healing sessions and hand-made crystal jewelry online.
Again, $30-$50 not enough to sustain a business and a family. But, I was getting closer to streamlining my time, so that I could make more money in less time. My intention with more money in less time, was to be able to be with my daughter instead of paying for daycare. There were A LOT of differences in my parenting style than any one in my family or anyone that I knew.
Raising a baby holistically seemed radical to most. Except for the group of hippie mamas that I found in the online space.
I connected with spiritually minded, natural mamas from all over the world.
I got clear on what I wanted to offer, my brand, my prices and how to be a social media badass. (what I help my clients do now)
And I went on to create online spaces and classes for women to come together to learn how to heal and how to make more money online.
I made double my rent in cash in one day.
One year after that I made $3,000 in one day.
The things that light you up are not an accident. The things that you know will help you, help others, and help the planet… keep following them. I help women gain massive clarity on how their passions can align with their lifestyle, and make them a lot of money in the online space.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I started building my audience by being authentic and vulnerable with exactly where I was with single motherhood and my healing journey. I looked for like minded individuals, and women that I aspired to be like. And I unapologetically unfollowed or blocked anyone that wasn’t in alignment with why values, goals or respected my boundaries. The online space can be very overwhelming for empaths. We pick up other people’s energies very easily and from just a few scrolls on our feed can be overstimulated with information, feelings and energies. My advice: stop consuming unnecessary content and start taking classes on how to make your own. I teach content creation to match your Energetic Signature and I also offer Social Media management for those who don’t want to do it on their own.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
