Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dana Truitt . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Dana , appreciate you joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later?
I have two businesses, I own a sandblasting company which is a form of construction, and we do this in the warmer months of the year. I’m also a full time content creator with an audience of a 1/2 million. It’s not easy to balance the two but it’s the best decision I ever made. Yes it was scary to quit my job and go out on a limb, but I was determined to make it work. We started the sandblasting company 12 years ago, and to be honest I wish I would have done it much sooner. I say this because I make much more money, I have a ton less stress as I decide what work I will and won’t do. I set the schedules and deadlines. While I loved the work I was doing, (which was floral design). It just wasn’t a satisfying feeling working for someone else, building someone else’s future and business. I thought why work for someone else when I can put my hard work in to better my own life and bank account. When it comes to being a creator was something l didn’t plan. I love photography and being creative, so I started sharing all things colorful by way of fashion, food, and pet photography on Instagram (@DanaStargazerTruitt). From day one it just started growing, in a short time it turned into what you see now. It gives me joy on a daily basis doing what I absolutely love, I wouldn’t want to do anything else. I always tell people invest in YOURSELF, it’s 200% worth it because no one is going to work for you like YOU!!
Dana , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
When it comes to the sandblasting company, we started it 12 years ago when we were working long hours, making very little money. It’s the worst to work so hard and get nothing out of it. I remember when I started in floral design I absolutely loved it, I’m a very creative person so it was perfect for me. But the years of working and getting nowhere, making about nothing, I just made the decision it was enough. We (my husband and I) took the little savings we had, borrowed a bit here and there, to buy the equipment we needed. Then we started advertising, built a website and the rest is history. We now have an amazing repeat customer base, as well as new customers daily during the warm months when we work. When it comes to me being a creator, I do this full time, once my accounts started to grow I realized it was something I could make money from. There’s nothing more amazing than getting paid for doing something you absolutely love. This is why I said I wouldn’t want to do anything else. I love creating the colorful, weekly looks, sharing the amazing food and desserts, along with the fun activities that me and my pup Piper of @PiperThePin take part in. I’ve also made and met other creators who are now my friends, all over the world. It goes on and on the pluses of this job.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
The number one thing I can say when it comes to building your audience BE YOUR SELF which translates to being relateable. Don’t try to be something or someone you aren’t, as people can spot this a mile away. If they feel they can relate to you then they will follow and become part of your journey.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part would be the joy my content brings others, I love reading the comments and DMs I get in response. I also love all of the the people I have met, both followers and creators alike, from all over the world. It’s absolutely amazing
