We were lucky to catch up with Dana Strang recently and have shared our conversation below.
Dana, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
It evolved, it started on the Big Island in Hawaii after my Masters Degree and wanted to bring health and wellness to the masses. Opened a Yoga/Wellness studio after being the director of a super exclusive golf and beach club serving billionaires. I wanted wellness to available to everyone, I have worked in the fractured system of health care except only exceptional healthcare and the time it takes is only available to those who can afford it. Great people, however what about everybody else? So I opened up a by donation studio, sometime people donated papaya lol, and then it got so popular we went from 2,000 sq ft to 5,000 sq ft and we build 4 rooms to have massage, cranial sacral therapy, acupuncture a cafe and lounge. It turned into a community wellness center and then we created a non for profit, Yogaloha House to have cirque and yoga events for at risk kids and families, since physical abuse and trafficking on the islands was a growing problem. Helping people heal through wellness. So then the concept of the Yoga/Pilates/Hiit/Organic Cafe/Acupuncture/Massage/Therapy wellness center arrived… long story long lol, It wasn’t named that obvvvvvs it was Yoga Hale, Kid Hale, Cirque Hale, Ola Pono Wellness and now moved to Scottsdale and same concept in the heart of the desert called Synergy. There is so much more but I can tell ya later :)

Dana, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
We give a shit :)
Nobody cares what you know until they know that you care, it takes time and most places fail because they don’t have the capital to wait for the tribe to arrive. If you are someone who cares and I have to believe most entrepreneurs do, (why on earth would you work so many hours if you didn’t lol) then it takes a moment for people to find you, then to change a habit, then to stay a while and then to make it their home <3
Retention has never been a problem, but waiting for the people to arrive was… you build a reputation by doing the right thing because its the right thing to do, by knowing peoples names and lives, by asking about their kids and maybe one day knowing the color of carpet in their homes. Is there another way?

We’d appreciate any insights you can share with us about selling a business.
Its only worth what someone will pay, but never give up on yourself, if you build something amazing and it’s not a fire sale, wait and tell everyone and be transparent as to why you are selling. The right person will come along
