We recently connected with Dana Marie Alkhouri and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Dana thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I think it takes a lot of resilience and patience to be successful. You need to be very comfortable with being told no. However, it’s how you take that no and turn it into a yes. There is always a way; it takes compromise, negotiation, and patience but you first need to be comfortable with that no and THEN you will turn it into a yes. Another thing I stand by, which I believe is one of the most important things to remember, is don’t compare yourself to others. Everyone’s path and journey is different and you will get to where you’re meant to be. What’s meant for you will not pass you. It’s the bar one sets for themselves and the path you follow. Success is defined in so many ways- and success means something different to everyone. Someone may think it means having a lot of money, owning a home, passing an exam or just being able to wake up in the morning. As I said before, don’t compare yourself to others; everyone’s path to success is different.
Dana, love having you share your insights with us. What are you most proud of?
I think what I’m most proud of is the community and network I’ve been able to build. I think it’s important to have mentors and people you can look up to or just simply ask questions about life or work. This also led me to co-founding The Sidelines. It is a female-founded, all-inclusive sports and lifestyle newsletter covering sports news, viral moments, and wellness trends while spotlighting women and non-binary change-makers throughout the industry. More importantly, it spotlights the women behind the scenes, not just the ones on the courts or fields. It highlights the founders trying to make a difference in this world. It’s not only a place for people to get sports news content, but a channel for female empowerment as well.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
Be understanding and patient. As much as we want to control everything we simply can’t. As long as you communicate any concerns in a healthy manner there shouldn’t be many issues. One person can’t do it all, no matter how hard we try. Having a great team is not just a representation of your company but also a representation of you. When you’re patient with people they will give you grace. It helps build respect and loyalty. Also, also give credit where credit is due. Positive recognition is so important and I think is a huge part of morale.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
We interned together at Bustle in the summer of 2018 in New York and stayed friends ever since. She’s truly a remarkable co-founder and friend. We have different strengths which is why we’ve been able to grow The Sidelines together.
