We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dana Lauren Castro a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dana Lauren, appreciate you joining us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
As I sat down in the dimly lit local gastropub with my laptop open, I never could have imagined the whirlwind of events that would soon follow. It all started when I was hired to do some light social media work for an African American conservative female candidate running for office. She had a powerful message and a strong presence, but her campaign was lacking the strategic direction it needed to truly succeed.
I poured my heart and soul into creating engaging content, managing her social media platforms, and connecting with her supporters. Little did I know, my dedication and creativity would catch her eye in a way I never could have anticipated.
One day, as we sat down for a meeting to discuss the upcoming campaign events, she dropped a bombshell on me. She had made the decision to fire her entire staff and wanted me to step up as her campaign manager. I was stunned. Me, with no experience in politics, being asked to take on such a monumental role? It seemed like a risky move, but there was something in her eyes that told me she believed in me.
I took a deep breath and accepted the challenge. The next few months were a whirlwind of late nights that morphed into early mornings, shaking hands and turning heads.
As the campaign gained momentum, we faced countless obstacles and challenges. But through it all, we remained steadfast in our mission to bring about real change and make a difference in our community. And to the incumbent’s surprise, we started gaining traction, building a strong following, and garnering attention from the media.
On election day, as the results poured in, we held our breath, unsure of what the outcome would be. And when the final votes were tallied, we were not met with a resounding victory. In the end, I found myself cemented in a world I would have never pictured; leading me to new clients and even more astounding opportunities like marketing and branding a successful documentary narrated by none other than ‘Parent Traps’ Dennis Quaid.
Looking back on that fateful day in the gastropub, I can’t help but marvel at the journey that led me here. Taking a risk, stepping out of my comfort zone, and embracing the unknown has led me to heights I never could have imagined.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Picture this: a buzz of anticipation fills the air at Sony Picture Studios. The premiere of “Grid Down, Power Up” is on the horizon, a documentary I branded, narrated by none other than Dennis Quaid. Every minute detail meticulously planned, the epitome of event orchestration.
But as they say in Hollywood, the show must go on, and in our case, the show must go on without its leading man. Quaid, in the throes of method acting for a prequel to Yellowstone, suffered an untimely injury while being fitted for a horse; rendering him unavailable at the eleventh hour.
Cue the frantic scramble. Media outlets were circling like sharks, guests were arriving in droves, and our star was MIA. A classic Hollywood snafu. I rallied my media team, who, akin to an elite squad of problem-solvers, quickly devised a Plan B. Within minutes, a cameraman was dispatched to Quaid’s location, ready to set up a live stream. The magic of technology teleported Quaid into the theater; crisis averted, or so I thought!
As if that wasn’t enough, our guest list, which had been a respectable 400, swelled to over 500. It’s the kind of problem that’s good to have unless you’re the one in charge of logistics. In my black-tie attire, I found myself in the heart of the kitchen, channeling a mix of Gordon Ramsay and an air traffic controller, orchestrating a seamless expansion of our catering setup. The service staff and I staged an impromptu ballet of platters and hors d’oeuvres, ensuring that every guest was attended to.
In the end, the premiere was a success, a testament to resilience and quick thinking. The cameras rolled, Quaid appeared larger than life on the screens, and our guests left with full bellies and rave reviews. It was a Hollywood ending, not scripted but very much earned.
