We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dana Harrison. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dana below.
Alright, Dana thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I think success looks different to everyone, but for me success is getting up every time I fall and trying again.
Dana, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Im Dana & I run Atlanta based Humble County Craft Co. I love all things arts & crafts so over the years friends, family & coworkers started asking me to do miscellaneous craft projects for them. In the beginning it was anything from custom scrapbooks, jewelry repair, gift wrapping and everything in between. I loved bringing peoples creative ideas to life! These days I mostly run all over Atlanta chalking and hand painting signs for local restaurants. I also sell handmade jewelry at local markets around the area. People are always telling me to pick one craft & focus there but I’ve never been one to put all of my eggs in one basket!
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Pre-Covid my chalk/paint clients were my bread & butter, the bulk of that clientele being restaurants. So when Covid shut everything down the restaurants shut down too and that revenue train completely left the station. I had to pivot and rely totally on online jewelry sales to support myself and my family. I was blown away by two things-1) how therapeutic jewelry making was for me during an incredibly difficult time and 2) how very supportive my Instagram followers are! Every item I put on Instagram during that time sold!
Can you open up about a time when you had a really close call with the business?
I truly believed CoVid was going to kill my business, but then my wonderful husband reminded me that Humble county is a craft co, not a chalk or painted signs only business. He encouraged me to put myself out there in other ways, to use the opportunity to stretch my creative wings. So instead of shutting down with the rest of the world I got up every day and threw myself into creating special, one-of-a-kind packages to sell on Instagram! & because I kept getting up and trying again I was able to keep my business running!
