Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dana Crossman. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Dana, thanks for joining us today. What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you in your professional career?
In my earlier career days, I worked in Stadium Operations for the Carolina Panthers. That was one of my first careers and it taught me many lessons that I didn’t even realize I needed to learn until years later. I was a young female in the male dominated world of professional sports, Luckily, I was blissfully unaware of the pressure to be amazing and went into work every day with a desire to learn and grow. I worked with one of the owners and was present during the construction of the stadium and got to experience seeing such a massive project come to life. My job exposed me to monthly construction meetings with engineers, hiring interns each season to assist in our department, ordering staff game day uniforms for hundreds of employees, helping to name event spaces, work with the food and beverage team on special event planning, and so much more. Ultimately that role shaped me to be adaptable, organized, and multi-faceted in my abilities in business. In many ways, it prepared me for being an independent contractor and having the self discipline to run my own business.
Dana, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
When my life changed in 2015, I needed to shift into a full time job to support myself and my two kids. Going into real estate seemed like a logical move since I am a native of Charlotte have seen our city change and grow over the last several decades. As someone who grew up here, I felt that I could provide so much to my clients by assisting them in one of life’s biggest purchases – a home. Finding families a place to call home can be so stressful for people who are new to the area. There are so many factors to consider, and matching families with neighborhoods that they will enjoy is so important. Anyone can walk a potential buyer through a house, but being able to talk about the area and the schools and businesses nearby really add so much value to the tour. Finding that perfect match makes me so happy and it’s a privilege to offer that to families moving into Charlotte. And for families moving out of the area, being able to market and advertise their home for sale is so much more meaningful when you can also present the home itself along with the community history and unique features. I love that part of the job!
Alright – let’s talk about marketing or sales – do you have any fun stories about a risk you’ve taken or something else exciting on the sales and marketing side?
One of my favorite marketing stories was with in a Costco parking lot! I got a phone call from a lady who wanted help buying a home in Charlotte and needed a Realtor. She had parked next to my car in the parking lot, and I had my Realtor magnets on my car doors. She wrote down my number and called me that same day, we met for coffee the next morning and I helped her and her husband buy a home in Charlotte a few weeks later! You never know where you might meet a client – might be while you are buying groceries at Costco!
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
The best resource I have found recently is the book called “The Power of One More” by Ed Mylett. A good friend recommended it to me after she heard Ed Mylett speak at a conference. It is so inspiring and motivational – I have read it multiple times. We all have phases when we think we can’t do any more than we are already doing and want to give up. But giving up is not an option when you have others depending on you whether it is your family or employees or coworkers, I highly recommend the book to anyone who needs a spark of inspiration or encouragement to keep going in their business.
