We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dana Buckmir a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dana, appreciate you joining us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
Becoming an independent author was a huge risk. I contacted traditional publishers for a while, but after multiple rejections I decided to do it on my own. It was the best decision I could have made. I tell anyone that wants to become an author not to wait for someone to validate their craft. You just have to believe in yourself.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers?
I published my first book, Plenty of Laughs in 2018. It’s a comical account of my online dating experience. People liked it because it was funny and they could relate. Ask anyone and they’ll tell you about a nightmare date they went on. You have to find the humor in the horror. In February of 2022, I published my second book, Everything Will Be Okay. It’s a story about surviving domestic violence. The year that I spent writing the memoir was a healing journey. I hope that by sharing my story, I can empower others to reclaim their voice.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
It was very difficult for me to write about what I endured as a victim of domestic violence. With every chapter I wrote, I relived the abuse. But, I felt compelled to share my journey to help other women. It was a story that needed to be told.

Is there a mission driving your creative journey?
I’m very passionate about helping others share their story. Writing is a therapeutic outlet that can help people process and heal from trauma. In the future, I’d like to work with women who have survived domestic violence to help them write their story. Abuse thrives in silence and shame. When we start writing and talking about it, we take back our power.
