We were lucky to catch up with Dana Benson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Dana, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the story behind how you got your first job in field that you currently practice in.
Well the way I received my first medical Esthetics position with a dermatologist was that I was actually working for her best friend who was a Denstist. The Denstist had a dental spa, so I would perform front desk duties with hopes that someone would book for a nice relaxing facial or massage. The problem was that no one really associated relaxing beauty treatments with the dentist. Needless to say, I never really got booked for treatments and was not the happiest that I wasn’t using my esthetic license to the full. So the dentist mentioned that he’r BFF had an open position for an esthetician. I was super excited, I always wanted to work for a dermatologist. During Esthetics school we were always told, that it was difficult to get a job with a dermatologist.(more than 20 years ago) So I was super excited and grateful for this opportunity. I knew the experience that I would receive would be priceless. The Dermatologist was a stern older 65 year old German woman who was super intimidating. I would go on to work for her for 3 yrs until she retired. She was never afraid to tell you how she felt especially when you did something wrong which was pretty often for me being that medical esthetics and assisting was pretty new to me. She made me so nervous initially but she ended up being one of the coolest women I’ve known. She taught me so much, she would allow me to read her medical journals and test my knowledge on skin disorders. I was also able to observe how a practice was to run and be organized. I learned a lot just by observing her. She was fierce when it came to her business and craft, but she loved life. She was one of the first dermatologist to incorporate a spa into her practice. So the knowledge that I received from her in the Esthetics industry, not to mention the life lessons was Everything! I’m so happy that I ended up where I did for my first job in Medical Esthetics,
If I could go back I would do it all over again, just be a little bit more confident.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
The Esthetic Loft is a skin and lash spa that was born out of the many life challenges I was facing; challenges many of us, women in particular, face with the realities of life. I wanted to take those painful experiences and make something beautiful and meaningful for others. The team at The Esthetic Loft uses a holistic approach and a regenerative experience to help its clients feel their most confident. As my business grew, I developed a variety of beauty and wellness services. From teaching to esthetic services, and offering a retail product line. The focus as of late has been the education segment of the business. I see a need for quality education on advanced beauty services. I love what I do, but most of all I enjoy helping elevate those that work with me and those I teach!
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
If I could go back, I would totally choose the same profession. I love everything about it! Helping other feel their best and confident, the ability to be creative, autonomy and to be able to teach others to develop their passions. There is no other career I would rather have.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think delivering your very best when it comes to servicing others and teaching has built my reputation. I try to always provide excellence
If you do build a great experience, customers tell each other about that. Word of mouth is very powerful.” ~ Jeff Bezos
