We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dan C Bearded. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dan C below.
Dan C, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
As I grew my beard out I became very interested in the research side of things. I wanted to find the best products with the best ingredients for my beard. I wanted the healthiest grooming practices and tools. I started by being very active with online beard forums and then watching YouTube videos. One day at our kitchen table I was watching a video on beard products. My beautiful wife Sam said “you should try making your own videos, I think you would be good at it!” and that was all I needed. The next day I grabbed whatever equipment we had and I started filming at the kitchen table. I did not intend on this making money or becoming a business. I did however want to be different. There were beard content channels already, but there were none that fit the style I wanted to deliver. I am a middle school history teacher so I wanted to approach the channel from an education angle and it needed to be family friendly. No swearing, no burping, and not talking about beards for getting chicks. A huge unique angle is that from the start I wanted to bring my wife’s perspective in when it comes to the scents of beard products. With consistency the channel started to take off and I am now a full time content creator with retiring from teaching at age 34.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I wear many hats in this industry but they are all beard related. I created beard content YouTube videos showing how to style your beard, review beard products, do three livestreams a week, and overall try to solve any beard problems. I also help beard product companies with any needs they have with consultation meetings. I am the most proud of the consistency of the Dan C Bearded YouTube channel. I have never missed an upload or livestream in almost 4 years. 3 videos a week and 3 livestreams a week.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I had a situation where I reviewed a product and I was not a fan of it. The company had discussions of a lawsuit against me, but ended up hiring me in the end to reformulate all of their beard products. This was a wild ride, but so happy I stayed resilient.
How did you build your audience on social media?
The two most important factors in building your social media would be adding value to the viewers’ lives and then being consistent. If you have content that helps people, they will come. No matter if that is solving problems, entertainment, or just simply bringing a smile to their face. Interactions like responding to every comment really goes a long way with building the genuine personal investment.
