We recently connected with Dan Baddiel and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Dan, thanks for joining us today. One of the toughest things about progressing in your creative career is that there are almost always unexpected problems that come up – problems that you often can’t read about in advance, can’t prepare for, etc. Have you had such and experience and if so, can you tell us the story of one of those unexpected problems you’ve encountered?
Moving towards the latter part of my life in my late 50’s, I decided in 2017, to take my passion for Street & Landscape Photography and see what I could produce. Wanting to be in unfamiliar surroundings for a London born Brooklynite, I landed up going to Cuba for 12 days as my canvas. 8 days in Havana and 4 days in the beautiful town of Trinidad.
Having stepped into a mix of Colonial 1950’s landscapes with my camera bag, on my 2nd morning, as I stepped out the shower onto a marble floor, I slipped and landed badly on my left leg, breaking the fibula.
Having been given the choice of a cast or buying a cane, I choose the latter and hobbled my way around including climbing many steps, walking cobbled streets and going on a very slow tour on a horse, returning to Brooklyn with a set of images and a laughing Doctor in NY, it kickstarted my passion into an artistic desire to make a wider impression for my images.
I’m not great with words and hope my images speak for themselves as to where this journey has come so far and hopefully to see where it may go.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My discipline is bound by what my eye sees, rarely do I work with anything except natural or available light , I consider my field of work to be in street, landscape, travel and commentary photography.
Grew up in London with two collector/dealers as parents and books of many types around, in my early teens, I opened a large book of Robert Capa books and became captivated by stills photography, especially, reportage, documentary, street and landscape photography, based around the Magnum Photographers not an usual source for inspiration.
Having gone on vacation in 1988 to the US, I decided to stay and have been in Brooklyn ever since, got married, became a Dad, happily divorced and spent my career in the logistics industry, only occasionally taking a handful of photos here and there.
Then in my early 50’s I decided to pick up my camera and take my passion my seriously, I believe my portfolio of work since 2017 shows my development as an artist.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Documentary, street and landscape photography are my passion and if anyone is in need of inspiration, start with the staff and artists of Magnum Photography, eventually you’ll find you keep coming back to Magnum.
We’d love to hear your thoughts on NFTs. (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
